Philippines passes anti terror bill

They held a special legislative session to pass it. Among other things, it will allow police to hold people for three days without charges (the police had requested 30 days).

The main worry is that it could be used against the left/opposition parties. Many of them have close ties to the NPA or ex NPA activists and human rights/farmers activist groups....and many of the "extra judicial killings" have been of such activists. The government claims the NPA is killing those who turned against their violent ways, and the left claims that the government is looking the other way while military irregulars do the killing.

Sigh.
