Beware of the Grapefruit

According to the BBC, if you eat a lot of grapefruit, you have an increased risk of breast cancer.

Grapefruit (but not other citrus fruits) slows the metabolism of estrogen: translation, it stops the body from breaking down estrogen, so you get a higher level of the hormone. And women with higher levels of estrogen have more breast cancer.

Previous studies have shown that a molecule called cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) is involved in metabolising oestrogen hormones.

This action of grapefruit has long been known to interfere with other drugs, including heart medicine such as Zocor, Nifedipine, and Amiodarone.
