Stuff below the fold

Is fungus the secret to the sweet sound of the Stradavarius?

Which President would be best in a fight (a la Hunger Games) ?

Jackson is the best all around fighter: both in hand to hand fighting and as a General (his tactics save New Orleans even if it was after the peace treaty was signed). So I'd take Jackson for a skirmish, if for no other reason than he'd fight dirty if necessary.

But I'd chose Washington for a war.
Why?
The dirty little secret of Washington was that he was not just good at fighting, but he was great with the less glamourous passive strategies that kept the revolution viable (i.e. keeping smallpox from killing his troops: If all the generals had done that Canada would be part of the US).
And he was good at keeping the army viable during retreat (a very difficult thing).
So in a fight, chose Jackson. If you want to stay alive as a group, chose Washington.

But Tyree has the best comment on the "hunger games" scenerio:

Seriously? The Presidents look around at each other and say, “Who in Gods Green Earth decided we should fight to the death? We are free men...
The enemy game masters Execute Washington to gain some obedience, and a very short bloody war later most of the remaining Presidents walk away victorious.
The few surviving game masters look up from their prison holes and General Lee looks down on them said, “... You picked on the wrong country, the wrong people and you combined our strength by 13 generations. You are irredeemably stupid and like so many of our enemies, your stupidity has been your downfall.”

UKBishops suggest that Catholics there start the 3 pm habit:

at 3pm, stop for one minute and pray silently to God.

We have that here in the Philippines, and even some of our TV/radio stations allow ads to remind people at that time.

In contrast, the "4 pm habit" is weekly, to check your home for accumulations of water that could breed mosquitos. Those suckers are a problem, which is why we have koi in our fountain...
One of the problems with our "swamp cooler" is the tendency for mosquito larvae to breed inside, so we have to change water frequently in it.

A popular government official died in a plane crash about a week ago, and now rumors that it was a hit are starting to make sense.
I mean, I can see why they "locked down" his office when the accident was reported, but guess who was told to do it?
