Ignore the hysteria: These are the big stories

I checked the news, and there was Trump meeting with the Emir of Kuwait about trying to stop an atrocity in Syria that could kill about 100 thousand people ( and force 700 thousand to flee)...

but then of course the press didn't care: They wanted to push the latest "Trump is crazy" book so asked questions about that instead of what the press conference was discussing (hmm... isn't this about the fifth "Trumpieboy is crazy" book that was published this year?)

(Update: HA! Dilbert says, well, if you ever worked in business, you will hear similar complaints about the boss. Podcast HERE).

Here is a report on Gulf News about the meeting.

The situation in the Arabian Gulf and the developments in the Middle East peace process will top the agenda of the international talks between Kuwait Emir and the US president when they meet at the White House, Deputy Foreign Minister Khalid Al Jarallah has said. The challenges within the framework of the international coalition against terrorism will also figure high on the agenda of the discussions between Shaikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah and President Donald Trump on Wednesday.
and then there is the worry that Iran will shut down the strait of Hormuz just to be mean to their neighbors who export their petroleum through that narrow strait.

actually, despite the hysteria that thinks America would be affected by this, it ignores the dirty little secret that fracking, Canada and Mexico are the sources of US oil.

However, it would really mess up Europe, who would be stuck buying from Russia or maybe even from Texas, and never mind that China and India, who buy a lot of Iran's oil, would be screwed too, might turn against the crazy mullahs.

but never mind: Must push meme. Even when it is unbelievable, such as the most recent claim that a very professional soldier was wandering around saying Trump is crazy: a remark that is so out of character it makes one wonder why a professional reporter would believe such a story. Who was his biased but unnamed "source" ? Ah, but it fits the meme and now the MSM chorus is telling the General he needs to resign and tell the world "the truth" about Trump's "incompetence".

Incompetence? As in a booming economy? As in a Middle East reset? As in rewriting NAFTA so that Mexico and the US benefit (but China is screwed)?

Trumpieboy may be non PC in his behavior, but he seems to be doing a lot of stuff that gets overlooked.

reminds me of when some people went to Lincoln and complained that General Grant drank too much and Lincoln answered:

“Ah!” exclaimed Honest Old Abe, “you surprise me, gentlemen. But can you tell me where he gets his whiskey?” “We cannot, Mr. President. But why do you desire to know?” “Because, if I can only find out, I will send a barrel of this wonderful whiskey to every general in the army.”

StrategyPage notes Russia has moved in and why;

August 28, 2018: Russia, Turkey and Syria agreed on a plan to attack and destroy the Islamic terrorist groups in Idlib province, particularly HTS/al Nusra. Idlib is the last Islamic terrorist stronghold and is in the northwest, on the Turkish border. Idlib is currently controlled by various rebel groups. Over half of Idlib is controlled by the HTS (Hayat Tahrir al Sham) coalition. This is the main al Qaeda organization which evolved from al Nusra by absorbing (willingly or otherwise) many other like-minded groups over the years. About a third of the province is controlled by several other Islamic terrorist groups.
book marked for later reading.

the problem? not just the huge refugee problem, but the fact that Iran is hated by the Arabs, so there is a danger that getting rid of the devil you know just gives you the devil you don't know.

Trump should be meeting with Putin about this but the MSM and Democratic hysteria makes it impossible.

Yemen is also a humanitarian mess, but the MSM/left only sees the "atrocities" by the Saudi bombings, not the massacres by the Iranian backed Houthi.

SP article.

One under reported Iranian contribution to the Shia rebel effort is an effective media manipulation capability. Not as massive or well-equipped as the ones created by China and Russia (the main practitioners of this) the Iranians do pretty well spinning news of events in Yemen to favor, as much as possible, the Shia rebels. The Iranians know what appeals to mass media, especially in the West, and what does not. Thus anytime a coalition airstrike kills civilians (or rebels who can be described as such) the Iranians see that pictures and stories are supplied to news media worldwide. Coverage of the nasty things the Shia rebels do to hostile civilians in areas they control is not reported because no journalists are allowed in rebel areas.

Japan just had flooding and destruction from a typhoon and another major earthquake.

In our prayers.

here, it is "hunger time": the time just before the rice harvest, when small farmers, who sold most of their winter crop to get money to plant the major summer rice crop, run out of money and stored rice. and have to buy rice to eat. But in the meanwhile, the stocks of rice are low: and so prices go up, although the poor are entitled to buy at a subsidized price.

So the big fight here is that there is a rice shortage causing prices to soar in the south.

NFA website. They are tasked to make sure there is enough cheap rice for ordinary people, and getting the rice into the markets to prevent the prices from soaring.

background article from Rappler (April 2018). They claim local farmers sell their rice at a higher price, so the NFA has to import cheap rice instead of supporting local farmers.

it's not just rice, of course.

here the big worry is that the gov't will allow importation of cheap (chemical filled Chinese) onions and destroy the livelihood of local farmers.

Of course, a lot of these are smuggled in anyway.

why do I mention stuff about agriculture when the MSM and elites in the west only push the meme "drug war atrocities"?

Because when I lived in Liberia, they had a revolution after the price of rice went up...

and also because we are in the "organic rice" business, and last week they had to import rice from another area to fill our orders, because our stocks are low.

more here at Rappler on the NFA.
Corruption or incompetence?
(note: Rappler hates Duterte, but the swamp/oligarchy also hates Duterte, so try to undermine him before he finds they are corrupt).

And then there is the problem of the rice weevil in the stored rice. (eggs in the rice hatch after it is stored). meaning the poor either have to eat weevily rice or rice that has been fumigated with chemicals.

We have to watch this in our rice: We can't fumigate it because we are organic (we often treat the rice with a blow torch to destroy the eggs, but that doesn't destroy all of them), so we end up having to remove our rice from the shelves and restock it. We end up feeding the weevily rice to the animals, i.e. chickens or dogs so it doesn't go to waste, but it does cut into our profits.
