Quinoa: Food for rich yuppies, or valuable grain for malnutrition?

Some NGO's and governments in South America have been pushing the high protein grain quinoa to fight local malnutrition in local populations.

The bad news? Most of it is being exported for rich American yuppies as a superfoodsnack, and the local poor are back to feeding their kids cheaper white rice, which lacks protein and vitamins.

Wikipedia describes quinoa as a relative of the beet plant, hardy in cool areas and high altitudes.

in a related item: Some docs in Africa are pushing to allow the high nutrition emergency foods to be sold cheaply in local stores to fight malnutrition.
