 Canada has eagarly embraced killing people: and it has almost became black humor in the memes.

So where are the people condemning the fact that some are being pressured into dying, or even being killed by relatives without asking for it?

But hey, like the selling of baby parts from second and third term abortions (something that got Project Veritas sued for exposing the illegal practice), the next profit making venture might be getting organs from the handicapped killed by MAID.

well at least Planned Parenthood had enough shame to keep it a secret.

In Canada they are harvesting organs from those asking to die. And they aren't even ashamed enough of this that they are willing to let it be discussed in the National Post.

What is the problem? 

Depressed people will more willingly agree to die if they see their death will benefit others

Shouldn't it be illegal for American hospitals to do this?

When I lived in western Pennsylvania 30 years ago, we often sent our car accident victims to U Pitt: And the EMTs used to cynically call these transfers Body Runs, implying that they were not being sent for neurosurgery but so that when they were declared brain dead, their organs would be harvested.

we were cynical but had enough trust in the hospital not to see this as a way to exploit the injured, but merely a side effect since we trusted them to try their best to keep the person alive before asking for their organs.

However, this might not be true today.

 

A recent report from RFK Jr's HHS reveal that not all those people were dead. 

 HHS Finds Systemic Disregard for Sanctity of Life in Organ Transplant System says the headline, and RFK Jr says he plans to fix it.

but just admitting this was not an urban legend but really happened resulted in a lot of people not filling out organ donor permission on their driver's licenses.

 Meaning fewer organ donations until the trust in the medical system is restored.

but now apparently they can transplant another source of organs: from people wanting to kill themselves.

This isn't legal in the USA, and most terminally ill patients are not candidates to donate organs. But hey, Canada is nearby and they are busy ignoring legal guidelines so they can expand  the criteria to include young depressed people, those with brain damage, or the handicapped, all of whom are an excellent source of organs.

Of course, this would not work in the USA since drug overdoses are usually used to kill people in assisted suicide, and the disease that may or may not be terminal but made you decide to end your life may also preclude decent organs. 

But as Canada extends the boundary from terminal patients to the depressed and handicapped, well, voila: More organs.

Hmmm... wonder who is making money off of this? No one of course.  /s

most books about tranplantion are optimistic, and written from the point of view of the patients given new life.

the Catholic church has accepted the whole brain criteria for brain death and sees donating an organ and transplanting it as a moral choice.

Yet recent stories about premature diagnosis of brain death (which were always dismissed as an urban legend or paranoid story) have now been confirmed: and of course, in today's post covid world,  we are seeing less trust in modern medicine.

There is a reason that minority patients refuse to sign end of life directives, including organ donation: They don't trust medicine. 

And this latest story, using organs from handicapped patients who were killed, is not going to help-if people know about it.

but of course they won't know about it will they?

excuse me for being cynical: it only a matter of time until what is done in China secretly is done openly and cheerfully in the west? After all, Canada is already doing it. no not on prisoners but on vulnerable people who live in a culture where their lives are seen as useless.....

  China harvests organs from prisoners. Not a lot of stories about this of course.  

Ironically, it was Dean Koontz, a writer of horror stories, who exposed the practice in one of his books where the rich  protagonist received a stolen heart from a Chinese prisoner as the plot. 

And a news story from last week says Putin and Xi were caught laughing about getting organ transplants to stay young.

Could millionaires be far behind?

And he's an ethicist, which in today's world means  activist who pushes an agenda rather than ethics (he is doing a racial agenda, which at least is better than the majority of ethicists who are busy being "apologists for deathmaking" and telling you why it's okay to stop feeding your grandmother when she is sick, or why it's okay to put infected covid patients back into nursing homes, or why it's okay not to treat the disabled with a low QALY for Covid because hey, they just might need that ICU bed for a person who is not a "useless eater"..

The irony is that it is the "industrialization" of medicine by big business, the profit motive of the HMO's and of modern medical ethics that promotes efficiency and medical rationing is not so much racist as it is working against poor people of all colours.

Because it places all patients and diseases into a box, and makes efficiency and filling out the forms more important than actually listening to your patients.

And that needs to be discussed. So Dr. Bradley is correct that there is a problem. 

It is his radical "solution" that I object to.

My point is that, by putting it into the BLM "everyone is racists" box, he is willing to destroy a medical journal. 

He prefers to distort objectivity and stop open discussions of problems by censorship. And those doing the censorship are a small group with a larger agenda, whose ultimate aim is to destroy western civilization in the name of diversity, and replacing it with... what? It's not clear.

Does he want a BLM/race theory takeover of medicine, pushing PC thinking and having struggle sessions to correct your bad think. And if you make a gaffe, will you lose your license to practice medicine?

I should note they did some of this stuff when I was in medical school back in the 1960s...and we had "encounter" sessions that were supposed to make us more honest but were actually about making us conform to the leader's opinion, because hey, who dared to open their mouth and say the discussion was bull....?

In these sessions, lots of personal questions were asked, which if you answered them truthfully let the leaders manipulate you of course....but I figured it was none of their business so I usually lied through my teeth when asked about personal things.

So none of this is new.

And yes, this is not about "racism": this is just the first step to destroy the STEm fields, which rely on evidence instead of ideological correctness. 

Again, this is not a "new" idea: Can you say "Lysenko" children?

Joy couldn't get my visa papers because she needed to bring a "power of attorney" paper. So we will get that tomorrow.

Joy's cousin's son is still in ICU after cardiac arrest from an arrhythmia. I thought it was sudden cardiac death from ventricular fibrillation syndrome, but apparently his heart is large, so maybe he had a viral diluted cardiomyopathy. His heart is now stable, but the brain damage is still there... and now he has been placed back on the respirator, running a fever (Sepsis? or maybe atelectasis). Not a good sign.

Sigh.

One of the reasons why docs shrug at that UK case about the baby on the ventilator that is making all the pro lifers hyperventilate: we see prolonged expensive care, and the result is a dead person anyway, or a person bedridden and with little cognitive function.

of course, the problem? in the young, the brain could recover a bit with time, so you hate to stop fighting.

and one does get the feeling that "cost" might be influencing the doctor's decision in the UK: Remember that terrorist dying of cancer who was denied treatment, and Ghadaffy got him home and the guy lived two years? Tony Blair was criticized for letting him go when he didn't die right away, but the reason was that the NIH had refused to treat his cancer. Dirty little secret about the British health system: QALY.

Catholic ethics don't allow euthanasia, but also don't insist on "extraordinary" treatment to keep someone alive.

So what is "extraordinary"? Depends on the time, place, age, and health of the person.

For example, amputating a limb was once considered "extraordinary" treatment, so refusing amputation, which would have left you unable to work, was ethical in the past.

Dialysis is still "extraordinary" here in the Philippines, as it was in the US until Medicare started to pay for it.

Ventilators are "extraordinary treatment". Period.

Feeding tubes were also "optional" until recently: John Paul II noted that there was a euthanasia scam to kill patients, where the tube removed deliberately to kill them when often they were not "comatose", just brain damaged... I say scam because the staff were forbidden to feed them when the tube was removed, even when the patient asked for water, so often the patients were given sedation to keep them quiet.

usually the pro euthanasia press calls these people "vegetables", but if they were actually in PVS, a tube would only keep them alive for 6 months according to studies: but the dirty little secret is that "PVS" is misdiagnosed in 30 percent of cases.

(When I worked with the mentally retarded, we had several of our patients diagnosed as PVS after a short visit with the consulting neurologist, when we knew that they could recognize and interact with staff. )

And some neurologists recommend "stopping treatment" (aka starving the person) even when they didn't come near the "PVS" diagnosis: We had an Ojibwa lady with frontal lobe syndrome, where the consultant didn't examine her but spent the hour trying to talk the family into stopping the feeding tube. When they left, the niece told him off: That's the difference between you white folks and we Indians: We care for our elders.

which explains why Lolo wanted to retire to the Philippines: They respect and care for elders here, (although the danger of overtreatment if you do go to the hospital is a lot less than in the lawsuit happy US).

On the other hand, too often the feeding tube is put in for "convenience" of the staff, so they don't have to bother to take time to feed an often uncooperative patient.

Bad or good? in many cases, the feeding tube might not prolong the life much, but at least you die fat and happy, without bedsores and other complications from malnutrition.

Some men just don't want the tube and say so. The original "Brophy" case was this: Everyone in town knew he said he never would want to be kept alive with a tube, so even the church backed his wife's court case to have it removed.

In contrast, the Schiavo case was pushed because the husband wanted to remarry so suddenly "remembered" she didn't want a tube to keep her alive: and what made it a euthanasia case was because the family were willing to nurse her in their home...

And of course, for terminal patients, IV's and feeding tubes are extraordinary treatment: Lolo didn't eat the last week of his life, but would take small amounts of fluids and medicine. He didn't want the hospital, so died in his bed, a choice that Barbara Bush just made.

Here in the Philippines, a lot of the poor can't even afford their high blood pressure or diabetes medicines, so it is quite common to see men limping with a foot drop from a stroke. Or they die of complications. Our new mayor has started a program to supply these to the poor, and also to pay for rabies shots and basic antibiotics for kids, but alas the program often runs out of medicine, so they come to our door for help to pay for this. (we are down the street from the clinic).

Back to Joy's cousin: the reason he didn't die was because his sister in law who was a nurse was there and started CPR, and the ambulance came quickly, and the hospital was a class A hospital in a large city. If it had happened here, he would have been DOA.

so if you believe in God, and that "everything" that happens has a reason, then you have to blame God not only for his cardiomyopathy but for the fact his sister in law was there to give CPR.

Sigh. The family has had several other health problems in the last year, and when I heard this, all I could think of was "Job".

I have seen this, alas. And it will get worse as the decision will be made by cost conscious bureaucrats instead of families or doctors who know the patient.

The problem we docs face: there is a subtle line between non treatment because you think the patient is better off dead, vs deciding less invasive treatment when aggressive care means a low benefit/high side effect ratio. Often families think "more is better", when often less aggressive therapy is better for the patient.

But often deciding on less aggressive treatment that would save the patient's life would quickly morphs to "no treatment", which is the danger of having a DNR order on the chart, which is often interpreted by staff or others as "don't do anything he's better off dead".



But now we see pushback: Texas seeking to make a law that doctors can't write a DNR order without the patient's permission.

it might have been better just to keep the Hippocratic oath, but modern medical ethicists have been trying to destroy that oath since I was in medical school, because it forbids abortion, euthanasia, sleeping with patients, putting the patient's needs over the "needs" of society, and insists on privacy.

Modern oaths let you do all these things and still be considered "ethical".

Sigh. This is not good: already our chicken industry is marginal due to cheap imports, and now this. Note: we used to do this, until a typhoon destroyed our chicken houses (luckily between "grows" so no chickens were killed).

The gov't will supervise the "culls", but the real danger is that some people will decide to illegally sell the sick chickens to locals, and people will start to die.

Yes. Valley of tears. Modern life tends to insist we live in paradise and can do everything ourselves. Nonsense of course, but never mind.

The Disabilities act has mandated that society accept the handicapped and that is a good thing. But what about when even the electric wheelchairs and computers aren't enough? And what about the cost? Will the removal of Obamacare result in more handicapped being forced into the prisons of clean but dehumanizing nursing homes, or will it just offer them the "right" to kill themselves, as is being done in a couple of European countries, where the elderly are offing themselves when they feel their lives are useless?

As for the congenital anomalie of Spna Bifida: It can be treated, but it is expensive and need repeated surgeries. when I worked in Africa 35 years ago, we didn't do the complicated surgical repair it at birth, since the pulmonary and renal problems usually were fatal in childhood....

At that time, we were losing children from measles and kwashiorkor and diarrhea, which could be treated for a couple of dollars, so surgery that cost hundreds of dollars in a hospital 200 miles away was not an option...(things have improved since then, thankfully)...

yet those with  less severe problems, and those who had various other handicaps could be found in villages, and some of them we referred for surgery or job training, which was starting to become available.

Usually this handicap is treated in advanced countries... but in the shadows, there remains the debate if we can "afford" to treat them....

Past cases include Baby Jane Doe, where the pro death NYTimes cheered the parents on when they obeyed the doctors and decided not to let doctors operate on their child (ironically, the kid lived, and the parents changed their mind. She is still alive 25 years later)...

Another case was the notorious "treatment vs non treatment" study in Oklahoma  where a QALY criteria was used to decide if the kid deserved treatment..

.(a black doctor later reviewed the cases and found a racial bias in the selection, so most of the black kids were not treated. Well, duh. But of course, it wasn't "race" behind the doctors recommendations: most of the minority kids weren't treated because... being poor meant they'd have a negative Quality of Life years so they failed the criteria for treatment...)

complaints that doctors let those with poor quality of life live, so we need to be allowed to kill them is not a new idea: It goes back to the Republic and was resurrected by the Eugenicists long before the Nazis picked up the idea and ran with it.

So more recently, ethicists are again being praised for their "bold" assertion that infanticide is okay in some cases (while in the Netherlands they might just be killed outright).

Even the newfangled Vatican experts are getting into the mood: Luckily the Pope corrected them, and has called such killing false compassion,  (one does wish he would remove the barbarians from his minions instead of condemning the quiet Christians who are so rigid they insist on the reality of sin, but never mind).

So excuse me if I don't join the hyperventilation of the MSM about Nazis marching in the streets.

The real Nazis are not marching in the streets: They are the ethicists in academia who want the right to decide whether you should live or die.

Last week I noted how Obamacare regulations are trying to push abortion and sex change operations on hospitals that get "tax payer money"... so I predict the USA will see government regulations pushing murder  in the next few years too, probably via the courts, as is being done in Canada...

John Paul II wrote an encyclical warning about this agenda in the early 1990's...

This will be pushed as "compassion", but the ultimate aim is to save money  by rationing health care by QALY criteria, (where minorities will be overrepresented...) but offering "self deliverance" as an alternative. But for the independent upper class folks, there are already "discussions on death" that subtly use social pressure to encourage the "useless eaters" to get themselves dead one way or another....

Welcome to the culture of death

The BMJ has an entire issue discussing infanticide.

There are a few with fuzzy arguments why this is wrong.

None seem to have a religious argument (such as "Well, the Lord God said it was a no no to kill your babies" (this one dismisses religion as being against "questioning" things, therefore we need to discard all religious arguments, and then dismisses what he thinks their arguments are, not what religions actually believe.)

"Every murder or other injury, no matter for what cause, committed or inflicted on another is a crime against humanity."

of course, they use a "hat trick" by redefining murder as the killing of a person, and then redefine who is a person according to their own ideas.

The problem? Who died and made them king? Why do we allow these people the "right" to remove the right to live from huge segments of humanity?

Hannah Arendt in her book Eichman in Jerusalem actually predicted this would happen, that in the future experts will devise criterias for personhood and then arrange to kill those who don't meet the criteria.

Sigh.

Keeping Catholic hospitals Catholic...there is an agenda here, which is for a secular takeover of Catholic hospitals.

Why do I say this? Because there is no logical reason that a Catholic hospital had to do the abortion (and yes, despite their protests, it was not an "emergency"...).

Medically you had three choices: 1)The patient could have been carried to 28 weeks and delivered; 2) a routine transfer to another hospital by her request could easily have been done and they could decide to abort her or not. 3)if she was so sick neither of these options could be considered, she would be a candidate for heart lung transplant without aborting her. The prognosis for the kid would be low, but not zero...

I probably would leave it up to the patient, and transfer her to someone who can give her ALL options... In my experience of medically dangerous pregnancies, half abort...Logically, you would think all would abort, but there are a lot of moms who will risk death to have the kid: more than you would think...One of these moms used to show me her kid every time she brought him to baby clinic, and would tell me: See you were wrong.
