Family news

my stepson is in the US planning to move his mother from her nursing home there to the Philippines where she can stay with family since she no longer could care for herself,

The bad news?

The extra bedroom is in my house.

Actually he wanted me to move upstairs to the apartment we have there, but my walking ability is shot since I had neuromuscular complications from dengue and I can't manage the stairs

So we will be in the same house.

So right now, we have all sorts of workmen cleaning and painting the aging house including my bedroom.

I am not sure who he will hire for a caregiver (he probably expects his wife, who is a trained caregiver, to do it, but she runs her own business  so we might have to hire one.

Oh well. Does it bother me that my husband's ex is moving into what is essentially my husband's house? No because she is now senile and can't walk around, but needs a walker or wheelchair. So I can just lock the door and I still have two dogs in the room with me (she is a cat person and hates dogs).

My main dog died last week, and I miss him. But his two smaller siblings are now trying to take their place in my room at night, so now I have two in my bedroom instead of one....

Luckily we still have two other (larger) dogs outside to guard the business compound and an old female dog to guard the office upstairs.

so people all over cleaning and washing and painting: the place is in an uproar.

Sigh.

family news

Kuya is leaving later this week to check on his mom, who wants to move to the Phiippines instead of staying at a care center. The problem? She might need dialysis and Medicaid does not cover treatment in the Philippines. Oh well.

In other news, my main watchdog, Barry, died. He has been ailing for the last year and slowly getting thinner. when the vet checked him he was anemic but I didn't do more tests because he is getting old, although I did get him treatment two years ago for a medical problem. He was a good dog. Sigh.

heavy rains and family news

For last 2 days heavy rain and mildly flooded streets.

Not quite a typhoon so no bad winds and we have electricity and city water.

The schools were closed Friday.

The barangay neighborhood patron saint is St Lawrence so fiesta parade later today. and a Miss Gay Gapan contest was scheduled in the plaza for either yesterday evening or today

My arthritis has been bad from the weather so I spent yesterday in bed and didn't attend church in the evening since Catholics have revived the ancient idea that Sunday starts at Sundown.

Howevery arthritis is better today but since l don't have anyone to attend mass with me I will just sit iny room and enjoy the hymns sung by the Baptists who meet in our meeting room each Sunday.

In other news Stella our black dog's 5 puppies are chubby and healthy but their eyes are not open yet so I haven't checked how. many are boys or girls. Their nest is in our closet where I put a flat box for them.

We have another box in my bathroom for Baby our Mama dog but apparently she did not get pregnant last time she was in heat. She is 7 years old so maybe she is too old.

happy birthday

Our cook has turned 80 do we had a party.

some of her kids and grandkids and great grandkids were here and lots of food and a kareoke machine was for entertainment.

No she does not want to quit,  even though she has health problems she has more energy than I do

One wishes someone to write her story...migrated from the Visayas, married a tricycle driver and had 11 kids'

.. her family traditionally works for our extended family so she always cooked for my husband when he visited and then full time when we moved here. She is a widow since her husband died of high blood pressure 30 years ago.

One son went to college but died of sudden cardiac death at age 34 and another died of diabetic renal failure. The others work blue collar jobs or tricycle drivers and her daughter is my maid.

hot season: So turn off the city water

it is the end of the hot season (monsoon and typhoons should be starting any time). So there is the normal water shortage, which the press is crying global warming but it is actully normal this time of year.

So the city has announced that they are turning off the water for a week.

Probably checking for broken pipes etc.

But very inconvenient.

Lolo put in a water pump, but it needs fixing and although Kuya is fixing a lot of stuff right now, the pump is not a priority.

I had our main handiman fix it but it may or may not be pumping enough. Kuya filled the overhead tank but we empties it  to do the wash today. We usually do it on Saturday, but decided to do it early.

So now there is the question if the old water pump can supply us water, or will we have to get containers and fill it at the farm where we have another pump for clean water

Spit baths for the next week.

Oh the joys of living in a tropical paradise.

family news

Joy is now back from Hong Kong.

She was with a delegation from the Dept of Agriculture that sent a group to China, Hong Kong and Macau to discuss organic food exports. But at the last minute, the Chinese part of the trip was canceled. Hmm... wonder if China is mad at the Philippines again.

Well, on the way home she ran into a British lady who had worked as a medical missionary to the Philippines years ago and had adopted a daughter here, so she was visiting friends and family here. And since her plane trip back to the UK was via Doha, alas her plane trip was canceled. Presumably the airports are closed due to drone strikes, and will reopen soon.. If she was rich she could reschedule via North America but she isn't rich and the airlines just say wait.

So she is staying in the guest room.

Luckily she is a dog person and the dogs are letting her alone (we have five watchdogs who we leave outside to roam at night to guard the house and business compound).

Don't ask me what is going on with the war.

Much of the news ignores that Iran has had proxies making war against lots of folk in the Middle East: Syria's civil war comes to mind, and their proxy Hezbollah put thousands of rockets in civilian areas of Lebanon, but if Israel takes them out, the news merely says Israel is attacking another country.

Sigh.

Sometimes I think that I know more about the military than a lot of these reporters. And of course there is a lot of propaganda out there: From China or the extreme left.

Trumpie boy finally called out someone named Tucker Carlson for being an anti Jewish bigot, and some of the anti Jewish stuff out there is so ignorant that one wonders if they are reading the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, which was a Russian disinformation book put out by the Czar's version of the KGB... I even read that some  politician posting a recipe that includes Jewish blood as an ingredient.

But hey, the press won't notice this because he is a Kennedy

In the meanwhile, the Pope has his knickers in a knot about trumpieboy on many levels.

Of course, he was quiet about the Syrian civil war with Iranian mercenaries who helped support the Assads in a war that killed half a million people. For that matter, he didn't notice or the fact that Iran's proxies shot rockets went against Israel and a lot of innocent ships in the Red Sea.

,,. Heck, the Pope can't even criticize China for sentencing Jimmy Lai for daring to say Hong Kong should have freedom of speech (under legal agreement after Chinese takeover of Hong Kong the British law was supposed to stay there). Instead, the Chinese govt imported their patsies to run the place, something most folks there know (because they speak a different dialect).

In the meanwhile, it is the start of summer here: Hot and dry season that will last until the monsoon arrives in June.

It is of course Lent, and last evening, during mass, a bunch of people came into the parking lot in a bus all with similar tee shirts;;They didn't come into church but went to the nearby open shrine to Mary across the parking lot.

. It is a fiesta celebration for Mama Mary, and the Church  has the Divina Pastora shrine here (translation: Holy Shepherdess). When we went home, there were five other buses parked in the street, and the maid said they were doing a pilgrimage to various shrines for some feast day this weekend.

As a Yank I am not up to date on all the feast days here. The city church honors the Three Kings so we have that fiesta, and the Divina Pastora shrine is there because the Spanish gave a statue of this Spanish madonna to a local family and it saved them from a flood, and then we also have barangay (Neighborhood) fiestas: ours is San Lorenzo, St Lawrence, the patron saint of bakers (don't ask) and the next neighborhood is St Vincent (the Spanish one), and this week another neighborhood where the mayor lives is having a fiesta (non saint) and then there is the Sandal fiesta (one of the local businesses run by a previous mayor, so not celebrated with this mayor). There are also federal holidays for various heroes, and then there is Ramadan, and of course Chinese New Year, The big fiesta here is May 1, a feast of Mama Mary, when lots of local people travel home for family reunions

but the big celebration is Christmas season lasts from Sept to the end of January and again it is a reason for traveling home for family reunions.

I mentioned I was in church yesterday, i.e. Saturday...I should note that since Vatican II, Catholics recognize the ancient practice of starting the sabbath on the evening.

If you have Jewish neighbors you would be familiar with this, since many Jewish families dress up and do a formal dinner on Friday night. This is best known to gentiles via the scene in Fiddler on the roof, but many Jewish families continue this practice (I had a Jewish roommate in Medical school whose mother kept kosher).

Well, anyway, here in the Philippines we have all the holidays off: Including the Muslim ones. Even though we are in a rural area, we do have a halal butcher down the street and several of the kiosks at the palenke are run by Muslim women. I am not sure if they are from Mindanao or were reverts after working in the Middle East.

there are a million Filipinos in the Middle East, so here people worry about war there.

But I have to shake my head in wonder when the US MSM breathlessly say 1000 Yanks out of 100 thousand living there want to go home because they are in danger. Well, the Phil gov't also say 1000 people want to return home too. But the other million are staying put for now.

Sigh.

Family news

Joy ia still visiting family in the Visayas. I thought someone was sick there, but apparently it is a family reunion to settle the will of her deceased parents who had land etc there.

While she is gone, Kuya is busy fixing up the house, including putting new screens on her bedroom windows (which had rusted out and had holes leaving mosquitoes inside).

The latest news for our rice land: One more harvest to go, but a good winter harvest.

But even though we are in the major rice growing part of Luzon, there has been pressure to divert land for solar energy farms.

 And now: A gold rush:

Someone found gold nearby so a lot of farmers are digging up the superficial soil to pan for gold. Presumably they will put it back into place before planting season in June.

grok says there are no reports of gold in our area, although it can be found 45 km from here in Palayan.

Gapan City in Nueva Ecija, Philippines, does not appear to have active gold mining, significant gold deposits, or gold panning activities directly within or immediately around the city itself. Nueva Ecija province has some historical and limited association with gold, primarily in other areas:
There are mentions of small-scale or historical placer (alluvial) gold in parts of the province, such as near Palayan City (where a "Palayan Gold Mine" was referenced in older reports, located about 45 km north of Gapan City and near Cabanatuan).
Some copper-gold occurrences or prospects have been noted near Cabanatuan (close to Gapan), but these are not major operations.

........more here is history

The province is better known for agriculture (as the "Rice Bowl of the Philippines") and tourism spots like Minalungao National Park in General Tinio, which has been poetically called a "mine of gold" due to its scenic beauty (e.g., clear river, limestone formations, and cave), not actual gold resources. Gold panning was historically restricted there to protect the environment after it became a protected area. No recent news, discoveries, or active mining operations show up specifically tied to Gapan City. Searches for gold mining, deposits, or panning in the area mostly point to jewelry shops, pawnshops dealing in gold (e.g., Cebuana Lhuillier branches, local jewelers like Helen Jewelry Shop or Chinatown Gold Center), and buy/sell posts for gold items in Gapan and nearby cities like Cabanatuan. If you're referring to buying, selling, or pawning gold jewelry/items in Gapan City, it's a commercial hub with several pawnshops and jewelry stores where gold is commonly traded (often at rates aligned with current Philippine gold prices, around PHP 5,000–8,000+ per gram depending on karat and market fluctuations). If this query is about something more specific—like a particular news story, investment, historical site, or local business—feel free to provide more details for a deeper look!

Family news

We held Kuya's birthday party so we have been busy.

He is larger than the average Filipino, so I checked out the used clothing merchants a few times in the last two weeks. I ended up buyint 12 polo type shirts and figure half will fit him. The rest he will give to staff or to me since I wear large shirts as tunics or to sleep in.

Joy is busy teaching business to the farmers in her coop and working with the government outreach. Farmers tend to be poor and their kids are leaving the farm land for better jobs, so the government is trying to upgrade their ability to raise crops that make a profit, for example organic rice and vegetables, which Joy helps by doing the marketing for the coop.

Myself, I had been weak and home bound for six months then suddenly got my ability to walk etc improved last week. I even managed to shop at the mall and go to church, something I had not done for months.

we are in the cool season, and the heat will sart next month, and won't  get better til the monsoon hits in late May, when the crops will be planted.

Our crops from the winter season have almost been harvested, so Kuya has been improving the house to keep the staff busy and employed until it is time to work at the farm.

Party season

Yesterday Joy's family at their farm in nearby Bulacan had a party (I stayed home: I am too old for parties). Afterward, some of them came up here with the kids to visit our town Plaza.

so after they arrived and were sitting in the waiting room waiting for the sun to go down, I decided I needed a cup of coffee, so went into my house and made myself coffee and was playing Christmas carols while waiting for the coffee to brew. and as usual, all the dogs were in the room with me (to keep them away from the visitors), and voila, suddently a big white duck walked in the door and came up to me. WTF was she doing there? I should add last week the dogs got into the big garden on the business side of our compound, and killed a duck (which we had to pay the staff for, since they were raising them to breed).

Luckily the dogs had just been fed and weren't in the mood to chase ducks, so I got the duck into the front garden and went to the staff and told them to rescue her

Periodically we have tried to raise chickens, ducks and turkeys but usually we lose them to the watch dogs, even though there are now gates to separate the gardens.

One year we had a turkey, and didn't cut his feathers so he could get to the high ground if the dogs got lose. Well, that worked: Until he decided to fly over the fence, and was liberated by a passerby...

Today Kuya had the big CHristmas party for the farmers who we subcontract to grow our organic rice, and also for our staff. Lots of kids and people here and a big meal, includin lechon, roasted suckling pig. I took a photo but will refrain from posting it because although it is delicious, it is a bit gross for Yanks to view.

So lechon, Pancit, rice, sphaghetti, lumpia etc.

They are still over there doing games, but I said goodbye and am hiding in my room,,

One advantage of being old is I can skip parties (Which I hate)..

Fiesta procession

The staff went out to join the procession after the 4 pm mass
update: The procession was long and ended at midnight after going all around the town.

This is from 3 years ago:

the city patron saint is Mama Mary under the title la Devina Pastora, the holy shepherdess.

December 8 is the feast of the Immaculate Conception, which merely means that Mary would be born without the taint of sin. This belief is the Catholic version of a belief of Mary's sinlessness that is found in the Eastern Churches and Islam. If you believe Jesus is God, you can see how his mother who carried him for nine months should be sinless. Or as the Angel called her: Full of Grace.

This of course makes my Protestant family full of disdain. They are strict Baptist/Fundamentalists. But Catholics allow all sorts of approaches to God, and here it is family oriented: Mama Mary is seen as our mother, Jesus the older brother, and God the Father the father who runs things. and of course, Catholics remember the marriage feast of Cana where Mama Mary told her son that the wine gave out. So we often see her as the one to ask to go to God for our minor problems that we don't want to bother the creator of the universe with.

And of course, Fiestas are how we learn about God and Jesus. Fiestas and parties and gifts for kids.

Family news

Lots of rain but since they are preparing the fields for the winter rice crop that is a good thing.

Blogging is light: For some reason after the latest updates, my Opera browser won't work. So I took it off and tried to download and run it, and windows refuses. Since all my bookmarks are on my opera browser, it may take time to change them to Chrome (which Joy uses so I don't want to mess up her bookmarkes with mine) or Brave. I might even have to use (uggh) Edge...

Sigh.

family news

a typhoon is going through the Visayas, meaning relatives of Joy and the staff are in the danger area. No reports yet. Here it is dark and overcast.

Downtown, they are putting up the Christmas lights near the plaza, so the electricity is going on and of to keep their workers safe (a few years ago, one man was electrocuted when one of the ligts he was putting up connected to a live wire.

Sigh. Reminds me of a guy who put up a TV antenna and the wind knocked it over and electrocuted him. We did CPR for over an hour, and got him back once but then his heart stopped again. Sigh.

One of the problems of retirement is that with leisure a lot of little things bring back memories of terrible things. I was a doctor for 36 years and saved many lives but it is the failures that come back to haunt me.

Sigh.

Undas: Time to honor our dead

here, everyone visits their dead loved ones in the cemetaries, which often means travling to the home village. So the country is essentially shut down for business and the roads are packed.

You visit the graves, clean them up (from leaves and dirt), put candles and flowers on the grave, and then stay for awhile and have a picnic and socilaize. There are vendors in the cemetary who will sell you candles in case you forgot to bring them, and also snacks and bottled water (beer is forbidden but they used to sell that too). And they also have toys for the kids in case they get bored.

IN the richer areas, we have small houses for the dead where the family is buried but in the older parts, it is merely a tiny plot where the boxes up to three deep are there. Lolo's mom is buried in one of these, and he wanted to be buried there, but two other relatives died in recent years, so there was no room... so I bought a small plot that can be used for us and the next generation.

We went THrusday to clean up the grave and put flowers, and might visit today to light a cancle if it is not too hot...but Kuya and Joy are Protestant so don't celebrate such things anymore. Sigh.,

All Saints day (and Nov2, all Souls day) is to remember the dead, and in Catholic countries, our dead in heaven keep an eye on us and we remember them too.

the above video is in Tagalog, but here is an explanation by an ex pat of how we celebrate Undas

happy happy birthday

I did a long post about my birthday party, my granddaughter's birthday party, and about the rigamarolle of renewing my retirement visa here in the Philippines.

I added two anecdotes about immigration problem where I didn't cross my ts and dot my i s corrrectly. And I posted how my daughte rin law became a proud US citizen under Regana's amnesty.

But within five minute Google censored it as hate speech.

go figure.

Sheesh.

family news

we had a big party last night, celebrating the birthday of myself and my granddaughter. No our birthdays are not now, but she has a week off of teaching in Thailand and so we decided to celebrate it early since she won't be here for her actual birthday.

The problem? Some of those invited couldn't come due to sickness. There is an influenza epidemic here in town, and also gastroenteritis, which is common in the hot season, either viral or from food not stored safely, so they are either sick or caring for their sick loved ones. Some came for the meal, but couldn't stay for the music etc and others didn't come but we will send them food.

They bought me my favorite: Roast beef (the beef here is not very good, and indeed, until an epidemic in pigs made pork expensive we never ate beef at all. But now they do sell beef which our cook stews for us. Decent steak or roasted beef means buying expensive imported beef because the local beef is tough and we always buy locally). Kuya also made a small dish of mashed potatoes for me. Yes we have potatoes but usually in stews, not mashed.

We also had lots of pancit, BBQ, fried rice, lechon pork, two cakes (Ruby cooked a carrot cake. Yum). etc.

Earthquake in Davao.

Relatives okay thank God

..................
update:

....

that is the third earthquake: A lot of damage in the Visayas but our friends and relaives okay there, but need to fix things. Now our relatives in Davao are busy sending us photos of all of the damage in Davao.

Sigh.

....no news about the smaller quake in Baguio, where we own property for a summer house and have relatives so presumably no one was hurt.

Storm update: Heavy rains here

...

heavy rains here, and overcast but no wind.

Thursday, September 25, 2025

another day another storm due to hit: expect flooding

the last typhoon hit the extreme north of the Philippines but the low pressure sucked in the monsoon rains so western Luzon had floods. This includes Manila, which is on the west coast of Luzon.

The problem is that the roads in Manila often flood with heavy rain, due to poor drainage and the drainage canals being blocked by debris/trash that people just throw away into the streets or canals.

Joy returned on Tuesday from Thailand  but she said that they did not run into flooded streets so got home from Manila without problems.

And now, another low pressure area is threatening to hit this weekend but like the last typhoon, it is close enough to suck in monsoon rains from the west, so they are closing schools in Manila (Not in our area however),,,,,,,

....

this video is in Tagalog but does show maps of what is going on

...

the heavy rains leading to floods is common in the Philippines, which is why there are huge anti corruption protests in Manila going on.

Apparently, government had authorized billions of pesos for flood control projects, but somehow a lot of that money was misspent or disappeared.

note: Exchage rate is about 55 pesos for one US dollar, so one billion pesos is the equivalent of about 17 million USD.

ABS-CBN has timeline of the flood control scandal problem.

The flood control corruption scandal, which first came to light during President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr’s 2025 State of the Nation Address, centers on the alleged loss of P118 billion in government funds, which went to a web of favored contractors, lawmakers and other officials involved in the construction of government flood projects in the last 3 years.

Despite the reported completion of some 5,500 flood control projects since 2022, numerous media reports have revealed many substandard and “ghost” flood control projects that were exposed following massive floods in parts of the country this year

Go to link for timeline.

some projects not even started, some done but with shoddy materials and oodles of money possibly diverted to unknown parties.

>Wikipedia page here.

The controversy centers on billions of pesos allocated for flood management initiatives, reports of "ghost" projects,[a] substandard construction, and the alleged cornering of contracts by a small group of favored contractors. In response, a series of protests against alleged corruption was conducted in commemoration of the 1972 declaration of martial law.[b]

as the wikipedia article notes: This is a developing story.

The background? Corruption.

all the local bishops (not just the Catholic ones) have condemned those involved in the fraud.

“This scam is a clear betrayal of the public trust because it keeps billions of pesos from going to the most vulnerable populations, such as farmers and the urban poor,” the bishops said.

well duh.

until the bishops and other clergy start naming names and excommunicating those who stole the money, most of us will just shrug.

the problem is that these people are "walang hiya": Without shame.

This is the way some people do business, so probably a lot of them don't even recognize what they are doing is wrong.

But excuse me for not being impressed until they start throwing out the criminals. One doubts they will ever pay back what they diverted, or go to jail for fraud.

As our ten year fight for justice against the ex mayor behind the hit that murdered our nephenw in the crossfire shows, justice is slow and incomplete, and when you die, never mind: You will be buried with a full requium mass complete with Knights of Columbus body guard

Sigh

however, as to typhoons and flooding: we are safe so far: here it is overcast with heavy rains on and off, but no flooding.
