headlines below the fold

the "don't get mad, get even" post of the day comes from StrategyPage, which discusses how escaped sex slaves and other women who worry about becoming victims are getting their revenge on ISIS.

By late 2015 this led to the appearance of the “Sun Ladies” (former sex slaves now armed, trained and seeking revenge) and now there are enough of them to form a separate battalion. ISIL is still holding at least 3,000 Yazidis captive and one objective of all these Yazidi militias (and Kurds in general) is to free the slaves.

the article also notes women who served as soldiers in history...often using smaller weapons because of lower body strength.

--------------------
This long Strategypage article is mainly about Pakistan and one item noted is that the Chinese are working on a port there, and building a pipeline for natural gas/petroleum...and Pakistan is trying to keep them safe from terrorists.

Two notes: I remember when Reagan helped the Taliban throw out the Russians, it was claimed he was doing so to be able to build a pipeline for the evil American oil companies. Presumably the same peacenik type people in the west won't notice as the Chinese take over the oil reserves in the Silk road region, any more than they protested the takeover of the oil reserves and the sea lanes by destroying the reefs and shoals in the west Philippine sea by the Chinese.

Second note: This essentially gives China a port on the Indian Ocean.

America only gets 10-20 percent of their oil from the Middle East, but this is another way for China to block the shipping lanes for Japan and Korea and the other Asian tiger countries.

related item: MomJones reports China plans to shut down a lot of their coal driven electric plants. Since China's coal is high sulfur, this should help pollution. But you see why the pipeline would be a big help for energy hungry China.

this is not going to help the number of people willing to donate organs:

People magazine reports that one victim of the Uber shooter woke up and did a "thumbs up" to her mom after being declared brain dead and being prepared to get her organs transplanted.

Headsup WSmith, who notes that this isn't the first highly publicized case of misdiagnosing brain death: Jahi, who is legally dead, still refuses to die.

My friend in Zimbabwe reports they had a bad harvest so there will be a lot of hungry people, and they will need food aid.LINK

it's a combination of drought (which happens periodically in the area) and bad management (the productive white owned farms confiscated in the name of land reform: some given to local farmers which was good, but alas most given to political cronies who don't know how to farm.

The dirty little secret about Africa is that these places, managed with irrigation and modern farm techniques, could be another bread basket. Zimbabwe has an advantage here, since most of the veldt is free of tsetse flies...Socialist politics, green policies, and the collapse of the economy, are to blame.

some news stories hint the land could be given back to the white farmers, or maybe sold to the Chinese.

In the meanwhile, thanks to the animal lovers making a kerfuffle about Cecil the lion, hunters are afraid to go there. That means a lot of lost tourism money, and now we read that the gov't will cull the excess population by killing 200 lions.

GIve me money

from the Politico, a US political website.

COPENHAGEN –Iranian Prime Minister Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe plan to address negotiators at international climate talks in Copenhagen next week.

The three leaders are listed in a line-up of more than 180 government officials published in a United Nations schedule of speakers. Each head of state will have up to three minutes to address roughly 700 delegates, reporter, observers and civil society groups....

but guess where the money is going?

Red Cross is asking for $32 million for food aid to the poor who can't afford to buy food in Zimbabwe.

But Zim is sending two delegations to Copenhagen...

"Robert Mugabe will next week take a 59-member delegation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Copenhagen, Denmark, while Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's delegation will comprise 19 people putting a further strain on the country's financial resources....

This comes at a time when Finance minister, Tendai Biti, when presenting the 2010 budget decried the country's total expenditure on foreign trips which was put at US$28 million at the end of November..."

Susan Tsvangirai RIP

The new PM of Zimbabwe, Morgan Tsvangirai, was in a car accident.
While traveling in a convoy 30 miles from Harare, a truck in the other land suddenly swerved and hit his car, rolling it three times. Mrs. Tsvangirai was killed, and the Prime Minister is in the hospital with unknown injuries.

Our condolences to the family, and to all freedom loving Zimbabweans.

Rant links

The headlines are too depressing to mention on such a holy day, but I have put up a few rants at BNN:

* The Melamine Trail leads to chocolate and seafood, 25 Dec 2008

* Mugabe smuggling in arms via the DRC, 22 Dec 2008

* The Bad Samaritan, 22 Dec 2008

* Ignoring the facts on “Bush’s 11th hour regulations” to protect health care workers, 21 Dec 2008

* Zimbabwe situation: famine, disease, and violence increasing., 16 Dec 2008

Two of the stories are on Zimbabwe; please pray for my friends there. Sister E. writes that people in her area are starving; the mine just closed, and the rains came late, so no new harvest for two or three months...

However, even though the feds won't investigate ACORN, the Catholic bishops are asking to check their books: The bishops are pissed that they might have used charity funds given for helping the homeless to fill the coffers of ACORN's founder's pockets, or to register votes in a partisan fashion...

Zimbabwe still in ruins...five million need food...past aid money was "borrowed" by the government, who now gives it back and promises never to do it again....and asks for more money...
Mugabe continues to use the police, military and his private "green bomber" gangs to terrorize the people, and although the police were supposed to be supervised by the winning opposition leader Tsvangirai, Mugabe has refused to do this so far.

So what does South Africa's mediators do? Tells Tsvangirai to "compromise" and then blames him, not Mugabe for the failure of the talks.

Sigh.

But there is a bit of good news:

the Billings Gazette covers the homecoming of Marine Sargent Tyson TwoTwo.

As a Cheyenne, they welcomed him back in the traditional way to help a warrior return home:

"It's a big relief that he's home," his mother, Mary Ann Bearcomesout, said. "I was worried about him when he was gone."

Two Two's uncle, Charles Bearcomesout, is also a Marine Corps veteran, having served in the early 1960s. He said that with Two Two's return, family and friends can help him adjust to life back in America. Much of the ceremony - including the singers and drummers and a ceremonial dance - was designed to cleanse Two Two and help him recover from any spiritual and mental wounds he may have received, and a sweat lodge ceremony is being held in Lame Deer today to pray and let him tell his story.

"People who have been in combat can change," Charles Bearcomesout said. "We have to become aware of that. That's why we included the medicine (singers) - to help with the healing process."

(personal note: I once worked with the Oklahoma Cheyenne, not the Montana band. But many tribes have similar cermonies for returning veterans...)

Will the Russia's "victories" in Georgia lead to Europe waking up?

one doubts it... note the lack of anti war protests in old Europe against the aggression...

Terrible Stuff below the fold

Sorry, I have the flu and the internet is going on and off...

I did post an article on BNN...GetReligion
You know those terrible "body parts" museum exhibits? Human Rights activist Harry Wu says they are executed prisoners from China...

yesterday I posted an article on Zimbabwe...Mugabe is pulling a fast one... he did the same thing thirty years ago with Nkomo...

On CNN, Larry King guest essentially says if white people don't vote for Obama they are racist...nope, issues have nothing to do with it...guess he's trying to court Hillary voters by making fun of them...
But I worry if Obama loses, there will be race riots...

And the latest way to get organs: Take them out when the heart stops, but while the brain is still alive...

And GetReligion links to the story of a son of a Hamas leader who is now a Christian...something that takes guts...

Mugabe forces raid hospital

From the UKTelegraph:
Mugabe's thugs are arresting opposition supporter and the "observers" who supervised the polls...

"There were reports from central Zimbabwe that the rural Driefontein hospital run by the Roman Catholic Church was closed down on Wednesday after men calling themselves war veterans kidnapped patients and beat up medical staff.

The patients were suspected MDC members and had been admitted for treatment after suffering beatings. MDC welfare personnel who had been trying to find both the patients and the doctors from the hospital have since been detained.

Stop Mugabe: Threaten to boycott the world cup in 2010

I have a "Mugabe" site about the meltdown of the economy in Zimbabwe and the civil rights issues there.
One reason Mugabe can get away with it is because South Africa's president Mbeki is keeping him in power (via money and political support).
However, the world cup is being held in South Africa in 2010, and thousands of sports fans will go there to see the games and to visit that beautiful country.
The problem is that right next door will be a country run by a murderous president that has ruined the economy and caused thousands to flee to South Africa and elsewhere in order to live.

Mbeki has the power to pressure Mugabe into resigning or at least not to re run for election, but refuses to do so. Maybe sports fans could help.

Rev. Hove has a petition up on his blog to have sports fans pressure South Africa to stop supporting Mugabe.

Or you could go here and sign the petition:LINK

Similar threats of boycotts to the Olympics in China have contributed to the Chinese pressuring the Sudan to make peace with Dafur, so come on, sports fans, sign a petition.

Lileks on good wars and Zimbabwe

I was reading today about a Zimbabwe archbishop pleading for someone to invade and take out Mugabe. He asked if the entire country had to collapse on itself and descent into anarchy, and the answer, of course, is yes; it does. When Zimbabwe gets a seat on the UN’s Sustainable Development Commission, and is not there to present instructive arguments against sustainable development, you get a sense of the strength of the fictions that bind the high-minded. It’s one thing to want a better world; it’s another to hope to will it into being by believing in docile sugared fictions about the nature of man and the equality of cultures...

Zim falls in hole, digs deeper, and asks for deeper shovel

In response to economic collapse the government of Zimbabwe last week announced that all mining industries would need to have majority shareholders from Zim...it is suspected this will lead to a takeover.

So now that Mugabe has ruined the farming, and now the mining industry, and the money is in free fall, what does he do in response to prices being increased hourly?

THat's right. He freezes the prices.

So now the shops aren't selling their merchandize, and a lot of people in the black market will get rich.

Africa stuff

I have a blog about Zimbabwe.

Rev. Mufaro has a BBC Interview about Zimbabwe
His blog is HERE if you want an "insider" report by someone who used to be a Mugabe supporter.

And THIS is a summary about using food to destroy political opponents in that country
