and we were told that sending home a sick person who had contact with ebola proved that Texas was a backward area of the country. Then what does that make of Virginia?

First hospital kept her in the ambulance for 20 minutes then sent her to a second hospital who used a checklist, not a blood test, to decide she was okay.

Later that day, it was determined that the patient who had been turned away from the Virginia Hospital Center not only did not have Ebola, but that she did not even need to be tested for Ebola.

Family news

Joy and Ruby went to Manila for deliveries and Ruby has to give a speech for her homeschool sponsoring school to get credit.

She has to memorize the speech and then give it.

I couldn't help her: When I took a public speaking class in college, we learned to use "talking points" and give the details spontaneously, not read a speech or give it by memory (similar to how actors give speeches).

That is why I was bemused when the press went viral criticizing Sarah Palin for having notes written on her palm. They implied she was stupid, but didn't notice she wasn't reading from a teleprompter like other politicians, but was using the technique I learned in college, i.e. use notes or an outline only.

---------------------------
a lot of this is about the PC elites trying to change the church's laws on sex and being non judgemental in the name of "compassion. But things are more complicated than that, because often this allows the elite sociopaths to ignore the harm they do to others.

A good example of putting things into perspective is this essay by old lefty Archbishop Cruz (ret) on the murder of one of our boy-girl prostitute by a US Marine...

and MomJones has the five most stupid response to Ebola in the USA.

It is not spread through the air, or by mosquitos. It is spread via body fluids, so unless someone spits, pukes, has diarrhea, or has sex with you, you won't catch it.

The main danger is to caretakers and those who clean up the place.

If it was airborne, half of those in the apartment complex and hospital would be dying. That is why SARS was a lot scarier than Ebola...

Bad reporting or incompetence?

I'm not sure what the Army is doing in Liberia, but now I read they are the 101 airborne, and they had 4 hours training and no protective suits.

Yes, I know: They are supposed to be buildling tent hospitals, but as I have written before: There are buildings, some even with running water, that could be used for hospitals.

So why use tents (well tents are airconditioned, so maybe that's why).

But Liberia has shut down all reports on Ebola, so the folks are dying quietly in the slums. a lot of slum dwellers were Kru or other tribes, while the gov't is run by the AmericoLiberians, even tho the presidentess is not of that lineage she is essentially schooled in the US and part of the establishment (Think World Bank appointment). Think Apartheid, by blacks.

The civil war there that killed a quarter million people was essentially a tribal uprising that resulted in tribes killing each other, both in Liberia and Sierra Leone and Guinea. The "second civil war" was merely a continuation of the first civil war, and the result was "women for peace" put in the present president with the help of outsiders. And one wonders about Firestone here...payoffs to armed groups to be left alone is illegal but normal (including here in the Philippines).

Hobb's Leviathan suggests that the mess needed a strong gov't, but it took the NWO about 20 years to bother to do so.

One thing few Americans realize is that third world countries have only so many people who are competent, so often the only answer to the chaos caused by "popular uprisings" is chaos, and then folks prefer peace.... a dictator is take over by the same group of people who supported the same dictator. Egypt is another example of this.

-----------------------------

Oh China is taking over their "Traditional" areas, never mind that other countries have custody of them for 50 to 500 years. Obama talks of a pivot to Asia, but the only result is that no one trusts him. The Philippines is too weak to fight, so expect more takeovers of our traditional fishing grounds.

The USMarine who killed one of our boy girl prostitutes is not going to help matters here.

And the real danger is that Japan might not stand for it.

---------------------------

The fake report released by the left wing "reformers" at the bishop's conference was voted down, and the press is having a field day condemning the bishops who insist that right and wrong might apply to matters of sex.

I say it was a fake report for two reasons: One, it was long and complicated, and no one had time to write such a report during the meeting, meaning it was written beforehand to tell the bishops what they should think.as David Warren noted:

a week that began in one of the dark moments for the Catholic Church — in the release of a synod Relatio profoundly evil and destructive — has ended fairly well. The response to it from the bishops assembled in the working groups of the synod has been stellar. They have made clear to the world, or at least, that part of the world paying attention, that it was a false and lying document, intentionally misrepresenting what they had been discussing inside.
since the "deliberations" were secret, they thought they could get away with pretending that bishops agree with them, until a few stubborn "men with chests" decided to " stand athwart history, yelling Stop,"
again, David Warren:

The Australian, Cardinal Pell — whose “dayjob” is currently cleaning up corruption and incompetence in the Curia — made the initial stand, leading the overwhelming majority of bishops to demand the publication of internal proceedings which the pope’s own agents were trying to suppress. I was immensely cheered, once again, by the courage and clarity of such men as Cardinals Mueller and Burke. Cardinal Napier of South Africa showed in both his clarity and his instinctive statesmanship a wonderful example of what a Prince of the Church should be. And in the “hard lines” drawn by bishops from across Africa and Asia, we could see the future of our Church: that she can indeed recover from the filth and squalour into which she has been led by compromised and compromising Western bishops
all of which brings to mind this quote:
  • 'How shall a man judge what to do in such times?'
'As he ever has judged,' said Aragorn.
'Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear; nor are they one thing among Elves and Dwarves, and another among Men. It is a man's part to discern them, as much in the Golden Wood as in his own house.'

Damn Aussies and Africans and rural hicks....

Well, anyway, the final report is actually much better.

But the press is disappointed but has replaced the old meme ("compassionate church") with the new meme ("divided church").

Oh well.

nothing new here, as St. Athanasius could tell you.

Don't expect any report with Wuerl's name on it to actually recognize some things are sinful. We saw how he nicely overlooked sin when he was in Pittsburgh...and Dolan and the new Chicago guy will go along with the "niceness" agenda because they want to be seen as nice guys.

Who could spoil their fun? Hint.

Damn Potawanamis....

Resident gladiator Jan Krueger steps into antiquity each week from May to October at Trier’s Roman Amphitheater. Wearing loincloth and sandals, he leads testosterone-fueled classes for men wanting to learn firsthand about the physical stamina needed by Roman gladiators — those showmen who participated in life-and-death dramas in front of emperors and an audience of thousands....His classes range from Gladiator for a Day sessions costing $200 to a $4,000 personalized “Extreme Gladiator” program (with hotels and dinners) lasting three grueling days, starting with blunted replicas before the real weapons come out.

Ebola

Lots of nonsense about Ebola.

It is NOT airborne. SARS was airborne, and people in the apartment building upwind from the patient got SARS. Smallpox is airborne, and in a German case, a patient whose room was upwind from the patient got infected.

But when people barf, pee, and get explosive diarrhea, caretakers and those who clean up are at risk.

Which is why the nurses are so upset: Not enough protective clothing, and they are often the ones in contact with the sheets etc.... Maybe they need plastic Burkhas...

But airborne? No. Instapundit notes:

THIS IS EITHER JUST GOOD LUCK, OR IT’S MORE SUBSTANTIVE GOOD NEWS: Dallas Ebola Conundrum: Duncan Family Members and Emergency Room Staff Not Ill.

of course, the experts insist that maybe the incubation period is longer than stated...however, if the nurse caring for the dead Liberian is already symptomatic, and his family, who lived with him before he went to the hospital, is not, then one wonders if anyone knows anything.

one to 21 day incubation period officially, but some cases came down with the disease later...or were they merely infected from someone else? The real question is if asymptomatic patients can spread the disease.
And how many in Africa have antibodies against it, maybe from asymptomatic cases or infection by other ebola like viruses?

Again I will have to google, but I have a life so may not get around to it

ebola reston?

If you read the hot zone, you know ebola reston kills monkeys8  but not humans.
about 2 yrs ago, e.reston infected some nearby pigs and a few butchers tested positive for antibodies, but none got sick kr rather none got very sick.

so could reston be used for a vaccine?

Reality check

my tInstapundit:

HEALTH COSTS: Ebola Preparation ‘Will bankrupt my hospital!’ Director Reacts to CDC Prep Call. “Treating one Ebola patient requires, full time, 20 medical staff. Mostly ICU (intensive care unit) people. So that would wipe out an ICU in an average-sized hospital.”
my comment which won't post (internet going on an off).

in the past, they had infectious disease hospitals for diseases a lot easier to catch than Ebola. Smallpox anyone?
When we had a cholera epidemic in our African country, we were told to take over a local school and use the schoolrooms for isolation wards. Schools, unlike village homes, usually had running water and toilets, and were one story buildings similar to American motels, with seperate entrance for every room and windows for the air to circulate. And a pit outside to throw garbage and burn it. Chlorox bleach to cllean surfaces works too.
So why are these people put in an ICU?
Ditto for stopping flights. Impossible, but mandating a 36 hour quarrantine for all incoming passangers at the local Marriott while monitoring symptoms and waiting for tests to come back would help.
Just wait till all those folks return from the Haj and watch the epidemic grow.

----------------------

Father Z on the PC document released by "the vatican" on the synod:

my take? It's the Vatican bureaurocracy/NWO Bishops vs Catholics. It's a takeover attempt, similar to the take over of the mainline churches in the US.

The problem? Their agenda has little or nothing to do with traditional Catholicism nor with the problems we face in the third world.

In the 60's, the west decided divorce was the answer for rocky marriages, and the PC theologians in the church delinked sex from childbearing, defying the Pope. We are reaping the whirlwind from these things in the first world, but in the third world, childless children and women deserted by boyfriends or husbands are economic disasters.

Luckily the first thing done by Protestants is to insist on following the ten commandments, which is why the growing middle class in Asia and Latin America are Protestant.

The catholics here are left with the elites (who are often left wing green types, who condemn capitalism but ignore the bribbery by their relatives that stops countries from investing here for jobs that will help the poor). And the poor. Join a protestant church, and you learn morality, hard work and honesty and probably get a job that lets you enter the middle class.

As for gay marriage: well, one doubts it will stop the seduction of the streetkids by rich sex tourists. We already have a major problem with our girls, but this will give a 'greenlight' to our rich gay businessmen to seduce their male employees and insist they are not doing anything wrong.

essentially the agenda is to deny that any sexual expression could be considered wrong.

and yes, I've seen this expressed to me by (mostly) young people, who don't see why infidelity, living together, playing the field, or ignoring their kids to get high with their newest live in boyfriend is "wrong"...

From the other McCain:

Jesse Bering (@JesseBering) proclaimed that legalizing incest between adult siblings is “moral progress” Thursday at Huffington Post and the remarkable thing is that almost nobody noticed. Just another “expert” endorsing our society’s rapid descent into perverse decadence:
-------------------------------

Cranky post of the day: A friend on facebook posted a nice comment by Malala essentially saying all we need is love, and I commented that no, all she needed was a bodyguard with an M16.

The backstory of this was that she had been threatened, but did not get a body guard to protect her, and as a result she was shot and several of her friends were hurt when the terrorists hit the schoolbus. A good government would have provided her protection, but then this is Pakistan who couldn't even protect Benezir Bhutto, and where the big shots of their army makes India a big enemy, so they get more money to steal, but they can't find that Osama is living down the street.

Of course a body guard might not have stopped the bad guys: When our nephew was killed, two body guard were shot and killed too, along with the politician's two sons (the politician wasn't there, so survived, and his wife survived when the gun jammed).

but that murder was about who would steal the money from the city's budget, not about religion.

more medical stuff

links from my medical blog

  • Ebola
  • exciting new medical treatment
  • let the kid die?
  • patient zero ebola
  • Ebola

Most of the Ebola stuff is hysteria or being spun for politics.

But an on site article on how locals have to help is from the NCReporter blog, about the Catholic hospital in Monrovia.

As fear and confusion gripped the country over how to deal with the killer virus, Liberia’s already shaky health system collapsed. In small local clinics, sometimes entire staffs of eight or 10 people were killed within days. The Catholic church’s biggest hospital in the capital of Monrovia, which employs over 185 staff, was forced to close after nine of their top doctors and administrators died of the virus.
According to World Health Organization statistics from Oct. 3, there have been 7,492 Ebola cases and 3,439 deaths in the current outbreaks. Liberia has been the hardest hit, accounting for 3,834 cases of Ebola and 2,069 deaths.
“The crisis now is health services have come to a standstill,” said Brilliant. Compounding the problem, in August, borders closed and cargo planes refused to land, meaning that things like personal protective equipment (PPEs), the spacesuit-like outfits that protect health workers from the virus, could not arrive. Some organizations pulled their international staff out of the country, but other experts and doctors who wanted to come to Liberia to assist found land borders closed and airports not functioning.
“This past month it’s been a disaster, and the government knows this,” said Brilliant. “Having said that, it’s understandable, because coming out war, the health system was not strong, there was no supply chain management. It was a disaster waiting to happen and it’s happened. The health system is shaken, not dead, but shaken.”
(Liberia’s civil war, when Charles Taylor's National Patriotic Front of Liberia overran the country, lasted from the late 1980s to 2003, when Taylor fled the country for Nigeria. Approximately 250,000 people were killed during the fighting, and the country’s infrastructure was decimated.)
As the country struggled through the early days of the virus in August and September, the Catholic church kicked their network into high gear. The church has 18 clinics and hospitals in the diocese of Monrovia. Even in the worst days of the outbreak, they kept 15 open. Across Liberia, there are approximately 600 hospitals and clinics; 300 are privately run and faith-based, Brilliant said.

so tell that a**H*** who asked why missionaries were in these countries that half of the hospitals and clinics are faith based, and this doesn't include private clinics or faith inspired people who work at public or privately run hospitals.

    Lolo is okay.

Joy went to Manila with a delivery and a trade fair.

We are starting a harvest today....organic growing means too many weeds. Chano is looking for an organic way to get rid of them without hand weeding. He's in a foul mood due to his back ache...

I am still doing downloads for my new computer. Most but not all will be freeware.

What happened to Youtube? I usually download my "elevator music" from there (I brought about 50 albums with me that I ripped from CD's that I bought to mp3 and listen to but have been increasing my stash with downloads ripped from youtube)

Now I can't find a way to download them easily with my browser. I will have to look up html5 etc. In the meanwhile, some will download with my chinese Youku downloader, if I copy the 'share" address. But since the router is going on and off in the hot weather, it's slow to download anyway.

Oh, FYI: McAfree caught two viruses from CNET's download page, including one embedded in the Youku downloader. Luckily I found it elsewhere, but if you start getting viagra ads from my email, let me know.

    Inspiring story of the day

    Bucket list baby inspires thouands.

When Jenna and Don Haley were told their baby boy would likely only live hours or days after birth, they decided to give him as many life adventures as possible. But while completing a nine-month bucket list while growing inside his mom, Shane Michael Haley accomplished much more.
Shane was diagnosed with a disorder that kills most infants hours or days after birth. His parents decided to put together a bucket list, taking Shane on various adventures to their favorite places. They posted updates and photos to a Facebook page, Prayers for Shane, which has more than 700,000 followers.
“We are asking for your prayers and support and that God grants us as much time as possible with our beautiful son,” the Philadelphia couple wrote on the page. “Shane has already proven to us that each day must be lived to the fullest and that is exactly what our little family is doing.”
    read the whole thing
    from The Christian Science Monitor

McCall story here, noted that the family was Catholic.

    photo from their facebook page.

and yes, someone hacked the page.

    Family news

Lolo is okay. He finds it hard to walk far, but his mind is still clear.

Our older yellow cat died (kidney failure and old age). Sigh. However, the black feral cat, Pandera, is pregnant and looks like she is due any day now. And we have puppies upstairs: Six from Chloe and four from Angel. All of Angel's puppies are brown or black, suggesting she had an outside boyfriend to do the job.

There is a small youth service by a local pastor in our meeting room, singing praise songs. Its nice to have young folks see the joy in praising God.

But Ruby and Joy go to her cousin's pentecostal church, where Ruby is busy leading singing or praise dancing.

Me, I just go to church early to say hi to God and receive him in communion. I'm not big at religious stuff.

    Sermon of the day

Went to church early this morning,, and it was superdecorated. A feast of the Virgin: yes, the feast of the Holy Rosary was last week, a feast day that used to be called Our Lady of Victory, to celebrate how prayers helped the victory at Lepanto against the Turks.

but this one is the Filipino feasts of our Lady of the Rosary of La Naval, that commemorates the naval battle that kept the Dutch and English from taking the country over.

there is also the feast of the Holy name of Mary, that commemorates the arrival of the Polish cavalry that broke the Siege of Vienna.

the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima, who encouraged catholics to repent and pray for Russia so that she wouldn't spread her "errors" all over the world, will also remember how Catholics for 70 years prayed the rosary to convert Russia, and how the Iron Curtain fell with little violence and no civil wars.

And of course, Filipinos remember our own People Power revolution, when the Army under General Ramos (a protestant) backed Corey, and was defended from Marcos' local troops by a million Pinoys lead by Cardinal Jaime Sin carrying a statue of Our Lady of Fatima and praying the rosary and singing hymns. There is no Catholic feast day yet, but there is a shrine on the EDSA (main street) with a thirty foot tall madonna, one of the ugliest madonnas anyone has ever seen. Oh well.

The idea is that if you pray enough, you can stop wars.

Why the virgin? Maybe because for poor people, the big shots who preach make God into a boogeyman who judges all your sins and is ready to smash you, but Mary, like your own Mom, will support you and welcome you back.

and the rosary is the prayer of "poor people": originally it was said by the illiterate in place of the 150 psalms.

So Mary is not just a woman who held the maker of the Universe in her womb for 9 months and raised him to adulthood, she is also a symbol of God's love and mercy.

    Lolo is fine.

Joy's sister is in pain and awaiting the experimental immunotherapy treatment. Keep her in your prayers.

Mama Cat has kidney failure. Sigh. She has barely eaten in a week but is comfortable.
    The puppies are okay.

I bought a new computer for myself for my birthday. The good news: It's cheap, last year's model. The bad news? Windows 8....agggh!

I loaded a program so I can use the old fashioned Windows 7 start page, but it took me a search to figure out how to adjust my touch pad so the dang sidebar stops popping up. Go to Mouse, go to mouse drive, go to the exact mouse description in the 4th tab and uncheck the lateral stuff.

So far so good. Took me awhile to do that.

IN the meanwhile, I'm downloading chrome, open office etc.

heh. Death panals actually exist...if you're black.

but this article notes that the press isn't bringing up the race issue.

Another reason why a practitioner’s recommendations might not be accepted by minority patients is because of the damaged relationship between individuals in minority groups and the medical community.4 This is another perspective on the McMath case that seems to have been left out of articles yet is frequently discussed among bioethicists: the legacy of distrust and suspicion between the African-American community and medicine. Historical cases like the Tuskegee syphilis study along with eugenics and race-based medicine, which presumed that African-Americans were mentally and physically inferior to whites, have created a lasting sense of distrust of and alienation from medicine by many African-Americans.6 When interacting with African-American patients, medical practitioners cannot ignore that remnants of and current instances of racial disparities in health care affect the modern relationship between African-Americans and their caregivers.

    quarantine

    http://www.economist.com/node/835123

    Wikipedia article is quite good
    http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarantine

The US military has lots of people with infecious disease training, but when I read news reports they plan to set up tent hospitals , I am aghast.

When we had cholera, the patients were isolated in local schools. There are houses, schools and churches in Liberia that could be used for hospitals.  I mean, it is not a refugee camp or Afghanistan.

    http://www.hhs.gov/asl/testify/t010723a.html

    ebola?

    Ever hear of quarrantine?

ships arriving from ports with a disease were required to not disload for 40 days.

so no, don' t stop flights from Africa, but arriving passengers shoul be reqired to stay in holding facilities for 5 days or 10 days and monitored for symptoms.

True,it would be expensive, but so is an epidemic.

factoid: Elizabeth Seton's husband traveled to Italy in hopes it would help his lungs, but died when the ship was in quarrentine...luckily for her, his Italian friends took her in when they were allowed to disembark.

factoid 2: before Jimmy Carter closed them, the US Public health service had a network of hospitals in port cities to treat sailors who were sick.

    family news

My husband Lolo is feeling better and now keeping his food down.

We went to the mall for his medicine.

The six puppies are growing ok.  The bad news? I rescued a feral kitten a few months ago...she eats here but rarely socializes...but now she looks pregnant. I thought she was a he but I guess I didn't  check closely enough. Our senior female cat is fixed, and the other female kitten is still thin...guess I should fix  her before it is  too late.

    Hong Kong protests

the big headlines in our local news papers are about the huge HongKong protests.

FilAmblogger BelmontClub has a review of what's going on.

Hong Kong is China’s equivalent of a march. It lies on China’s border with the world, not just in the maritime geographical sense, but in terms of interface with the outside world.  As the current capital of China’s financial industry, information (which is all money is) has to flow in and out of its computers under more or less the same rules as its correspondent financial markets.  The Hong Kong protesters know finance is their trump card and are leveraging this fact. The protests are designed to disrupt the financial markets. “Hong Kong’s stocks fell to a two-month low, its currency dropped and equity-market volatility surged amid the biggest police crackdown on protesters since the city returned to Chinese rule.”...But that would only shift the Beijing’s problem of the marches from Hong Kong to Shanghai, not solve it.  For asTime Magazine’s Michael Schuman points out “on the Chinese side of the border, capital flows are restricted, the banking sector is controlled by the state and regulatory systems are weak and arbitrary. Meanwhile, in Hong Kong, financial regulation is top-notch, capital flows are among the freest in the world, and rule of law is enshrined in a stubbornly independent judicial system.”

    AGGH! EBOLA HITS the US

    full report at the cdc:

and don't forget the Chlorox bleach:

because Ebola is readily killed by soap and water, bleach, or hospital disinfectants that are labeled as being effective against non-enveloped viruses, standard infection control procedures are indeed sufficient.
There has been no evidence of Ebola virus transmission from either the environment, or from surfaces such as bed rails, door knobs, and laundry that could be contaminated during patient care. The Ebola virus is a fragile virus – once the envelope of the virus is destroyed, it cannot survive long-term in the environment.
so far, no evidence of air borne transmission...

why facemasks? Well, in medical school we were told it was to keep from spitting in the patient's face when we talked to them, and vice versa. It may not float in air, but if they vomit bloody stuff on you, and it reaches a mucus membrane or tiny abrasion, you could catch it.

my only comment about Liberia is: It was a mess when I worked there in 1980, and that was before the civil war...

    Family news

Lolo still has the stomach flu.

Ruby has a fever, headache and aching muscles. I think it's strep throat but here we worry it is dengue or a similar virus.

Joy spent yesterday setting up for a trade fair. She arrived back late at night, and I opened the door but was too tired to wait til the car got in to see how it went. With Lolo sick, I am up with him in the middle of the night for the last few nights.

The good news: Sophie, our white dog, had six puppies and they look healthy. Two are brown spots like Papadog but the others appear pure white so far, so she presumably met another outside dog.

    blond bimbo alert

heh. The Diplomad is not impressed.

Elizabeth McCord, has perfected the mouth-breathing stunned ox look. She plays the whole episode looking like, well, an ox gasping for air after being hit in the head by a defective stun gun. She is a "brilliant" ex-CIA analyst, who left the Agency on "principle" to become a "brilliant" University professor, and is recruited by the President, played by Keith Carradine, to become his new SecState
presumably they should have casted the lady with someone who is aging but graceful and intelligent looking, someone like Helen Mirren or Angela Lansbury...

so tell us why the new TV show about a female secretary of  state shows a blond bimbo who is a ringer for Hillary?

does Hollywood think only blond bimbos should be cast as experts? Men can be 50 years old and greying, but only 30 something bimbos are cast for professionals and experts.

    or better yet?

Why not cast an attractive black female as secretary of state?

Nah. That could never happen. Too much prejudice in Hollywood to try such a creative casting decision.

And no, we don't have the show here in Asia (yet).

Lolo had the stomach flu all night. I had been vomiting but not sick, and Ruby had felt a bit sick too. We think it was the KrispyKreme donuts, since the timeline suggested it in each of us.(Ruby had them for breakfast, and we had them for lunch, and Lolo ate three at supper, but I didn't eat any later).

They were in the car from Manila so probably from being left out. Most food here is full of preservatives to prevent food poisoning, but I guess KrispyKreme uses more organic ingredients.

Today we are all feeling better...

Ah, but you can also use hagfish slime as a substitute for eggwhite. Hagfish slime recipe.

and there are other uses for these slimy creatures
including using their slime as filiments.
    From PysOrg:

The slime's prodigious strength and even more remarkable fecundity has attacked the attention of several scientists now trying to replicate it in the lab. While scientists are just begining to understanding how the so-called gland thread cells (GTCs) that produce the slime might actually work, others are already seeking to commercialize the slime as a high performance fiber.

    WTF headlines of the day

The five minute hate on facebook isn't working: Send in the astroturfing robots:

Only 10 Twitter users account for almost 70% of all StopRush tweets to advertisers, amplified by illicit software. In addition, almost every communication from a StopRush activist originates from outside the State of the advertiser... (thus) “A small number of politically motivated out of-state activists are distributing target lists indiscriminately, and annoying small businesses until they give up the advertising deals that help them grow, or risk being unable to conduct business at all. It’s not even activism… it’s blackmail,” according to Brian Glicklich, Rush Limbaugh Show spokesperson.

    ----------------------------

A couple blogs are passing on a story of two ebola patients "resurrecting" at their own funerals.

Diagnosing death is not easy in rural Africa, and the burials take place quickly. So if you starts very shallow breathing, have no obvious pulse, and are unconscious, you might be called dead and buried.

One of our teachers in Africa, a diabetic, instructed his students that if he "died", they should rush him to the hospital, because he would be in a diabetic coma, not dead.

Then there is the story of Teresa of Avila, who almost was buried but her father insisted he saw evidence she was breathing..

And once, in medical school, we had a patient in ICU who was declared dead, and had a pulse when they came to pick up the body.

All those horror stories of premature burials could be true: Which is why they now enbalm people first.

    Stuff around the net

BBC article on cloves, the sins of colonialism, and the clove tree that defied empires.

In 1652, after displacing the Portuguese and Spanish, the Dutch introduced a policy known as extirpatie: extirpation.
All clove trees not controlled by the Voc were uprooted and burned.
Anyone caught growing, stealing or possessing clove plants without authorisation faced the death penalty.
On the Banda Islands, to the south - the world's only source of nutmeg - the Dutch used Japanese mercenaries to slaughter almost the entire male population.
Like Opec today, the Voc also limited supply to keep prices high. Only 800-1,000 tonnes of cloves were exported per year. The rest of the harvest was burned or dumped in the sea.
Somehow, Afo managed to slip through the net. A rogue clove. A guerrilla plant waging a secret war of resistance.
Afo would eventually bring down the Dutch monopoly on cloves.
In 1770, a Frenchman, appropriately named Poivre, stole some of Afo's seedlings.

    the article includes this factoid:

A Han dynasty ruler from the 3rd Century BC insisted that anyone addressing him chew cloves to sweeten their breath.

The facial expression - one of the main reasons why the 16th century painting is among the most famous works of art in the world – shows signs of a build up of fatty acids around the eyes of the subject , according to Vito Franco of the University of Palermo.
The Italian scientist says the. model in the oil painting had a xanthelasma – a subcutaneous accumulation of cholesterol – in the hollow of her left eye and a fatty tissue tumour.
It suggests very high levels of cholesterol in the model, thought to be Lisa del Giocondo, a member of a Florence family who married a cloth and silk merchant.

Facebook isn't content in knowing your life story and presumably letting the NSA and a lot of businesses to spy on you, they now insist that you use your real name, and it has caused a kerfuffle because they are removing the stage names of dragqueens from their site.

Drag queen Sister Roma says Facebook should change its policy that bans profiles with fake names. (Isabel Angell/KQED)

A Facebook spokesman said the company requires people to use their real name to promote accountability, but drag queen Sister Roma says that is her real name.
“If you ask anybody who I am in and out of drag, my name is Roma. So currently my profile says Michael Williams next to this gorgeous picture of me, and it doesn’t make sense,” she said. “People don’t look for Michael Williams, and it’s not who I am.”

And one wonders if the "fake name" applies to others with stage names or who publish under a pen name.

and I wonder how Facebook knows your real name and that you are lying?

NYTimes has a couple articles and an editorial condemning "futile" care, especially at the end of life.

    Can you say "death panels"?

Most docs actually discourage this, but what they don't see is that often the "futile" care is done because there is a chance for recovery...and there is a fear if you don't do everything you will be sued.

Get rid of malpractice suits and you'll see less futile care.

And I should add: Certain minorities insist that everything be done because they suspect they will be left to die because they are black/nativeAmerican, and that if they were white, they'd be given the chance to live... Given my experience, sometimes they are right to refuse to sign these papers.

    ---------------------------------------------

Politics, political correctness, and budget cuts are destroying the US Navy.

and the press is parroting "racism" in the services, never mind that it's not true.
it's about getting out the vote, not about racism, since the military was always one way to get trained for a job, the result of the manipulation is a higher unemployment rate, but never mind.

    -------------------------------------------------

headlines emphasize the negative ignore the real story

children now don't die as much as they used to...

    Heh. Shangri la keeps moving

In archeology, experts keep finding "peaceful" cultures that didn't go to war, only to have their ideas found wrong when they find bodies (Minos) or literature (Maya) or other evidence.
Ditto for anthropologists, the most famous being Margaret Meade's finding of a peaceful Samoa which she attributed to teenaged promiscuity.

Here, the greens continue these delusions: There was a nice film about the paradise of a small island in the Visayas that they hoped to keep for ecotourism and they described the folks as happy in their simplicity. The problem? It is Joy's home island, and we always are getting pleas to hire people so they can support their families.

The problem is that a lot of cultures emphasize being nice, so outsiders don't recognize the problems there. For example, where I worked in Africa, the emphasis was never showing anger, so if someone got mad enough, they used witchcraft to revenge themselves. This is one reason for the atrocities in Rwanda: Anger explodes.
    .
Tibet was a favorite "Shangri la" and even was made to seem so in the movies including Seven years in Tibet...but the book, if you read it closely, includes reports of deaths of women in childbirth and children dying of disease.
The Chinese taking them over is seen in the west as "evil", but the Chinese are trying to improve the dire poverty there by development, and those sent there are paid extra as it is considered a hardship post.

So are the Chinese destroying culture, or trying to help the peasants to get out of dire poverty?

The argument about "Destroying culture" is true, but there is no easy answer. Try to educate people into the modern world, and you are now considered evil (although I noticed that on the Native American "reservations", that the ones most against development tend to be college educated Marxists...the regular ones tend to want jobs, hence the casinos and development of oil and mineral resources).

The Shangri la then was changed to Nepal, but after the regicide and the communist insurgency, maybe that won't last long. And now, after the last episode where 7 Sherpas died, a few reporters noted that the Sherpas who risked their lives to help tourists go up Mt Everest did so to support their families... not because they "enjoyed" it, but because it was the only job available that paid well.

well now, the latest Shangri la is Bhutan. at least according to a lady who graduated from an Ivy league college and worked at NPR.

Why, with a huge unemployment rate (leading to the gov't encouraging people to work overseas) and a high maternal mortality is it called Shangri La?

And yes, it allows serial marriage which is seen as a good thing, according to her (just ignore the children, I guess)

Also interesting are her descriptions of ordinary life in Bhutan. Guests walk into people's homes without knocking. Marriage is a casual institution, with couples deemed to be wed when they move in together and unwed when one person moves out. Not every aspect of life in Bhutan is so different from life in L.A.

yeah, just like LA, including children growing up fatherless and in poverty?

The UNICEF’s report ranks Bhutan 45th among 198 countries in under-five mortality rate, the highest in the region after Afghanistan. India is at 49, Nepal 62, Sr Lanka 110, Bangladesh 58 and Maldives 88.
Dysentery, diarrhoea and pneumonia still top the causes for death in children under five in Bhutan.
“The state of the world’s children is intimately linked with the state of the world’s mothers,” said the education minister Lyonpo Thakur Singh Powdyal in his address.

on the other hand, after promoting the country as an ideal situation, it is nice that the latest softcover version notes there is a little problem with refugees in the area.

The softcover version contains a chapter about the Bhutanese-Nepalese refugee situation, as well as a reader’s guide for book groups. \\\

so where is the shangri la?

Last week, David warren noted one poll said the happiest people were in Denmark, which sounds fine except for their high suicide rate suggests otherwise.

Today's "poll" says the happiest place on earth is Panama.

take the information with a grain of salt.because they also came to this conclusion:

five countries outside of these regions had levels of thriving within an element that rank in the top 10 of all countries: Bahrain in financial well-being, Saudi Arabia in community well-being and physical well-being, Malta in social well-being, and Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates in community well-being.
So, did they poll the 20 percent of the population of Saudi who are OFWs? Or ask the UAE's maids and oil workers if they were happy?  Did they poll the Tamil areas of Sri Lanka?

In other words, there is no "Shangri La": there are only people being people with people's problems.

    addendum from the BBC article:

About 100,000 ethnic Nepalese refugees from Bhutan live in camps in Nepal after they were allegedly made to leave Bhutan under government pressure in the early 1990s.
From this population, three groups have emerged - the Bhutan Communist Party (Marxist-Leninist-Maoist), the Bhutan Tiger Force and the United Revolutionary Front of Bhutan.
