A compound in liquorice works against the herpes virus that causes kaposi's sarcoma.
When I was in medical school, we read about but never saw Kaposi's sarcoma (it was another 20 years until this started appearing in gay men, due to HIV).
When I was in Africa, we had a gentleman who came in with a huge septic ulcer on a hypertrophied foot...he was also anemic.
I checked with Sister Humberta, who had worked with lepers, and she said it didn't smell like Hanson's disease, so we didn't know what was going on.
So we cleaned it up, transfused him (his Hgb was 6, half normal) gave antibiotics then transferred him to the next hospital for amputation. It turned out he had kaposi's sarcoma.
A few months later, a boy with many infected nodules on his hands also was diagnosed as Kaposi's...
This was, of course, five years before "gay cancer" was reported in the literature (i.e. kaposi's sarcoma now known to occur in people with HIV).
So apparently, our area of Africa already had HIV...and since I operated on both these patients, you can be sure that I was happy when my HIV test came back negative...
here's a photo of a mild case....and information on this disease...
