Well, according to Discovery channel (Yes, we have cable in the wilds of Luzon...and have had for at least 16 years) hippos kill more humans than any other animal...
I haven't seen hippo wounds, but one of my collegues treated a man who nearly died after a hippo took off half his leg with a bite, and the locals are afraid of hippos....
However, now there are reports of Anthrax killing off hippos....
I know a couple years back, a lot of elephants died of anthrax, and there were quite a few reports of human cutaneous anthrax, but again I never treated any cases of known anthrax. (however, since anthrax is usually sensitive to Penicillin, and since clinics treat EVERYTHING with penicillin, it's possible cases were merely treated correctly ).
We sometimes forget about these infections...during the anthrax scare, many Okies joked that if the terrorists wanted anthrax, they didn't have to spend money, just get some spores from any barnyard. And every year, there are a couple cases in animals reported...
