Blogfather has several links to personal disaster planning...
In Oklahoma, we had a disaster kit, including a tent, water, medicine, clothes, and a water purification pump...
The bad news is that we kept them stored in our garage, which would, of course, been blown away in a tornado.
There is an Oklahoma joke: How can you identify an Okie? He's the one standing OUTSIDE whenever there is a thunderstorm. (looking for a funnel cloud).
(I might add: the Okie belongs to the Jennifer Lopez fan club: No, not the singer, but the lady on the Weather Channel)
Our town had a shelter, but to get my husband there was a nightmare. But the neighbors had an underground shelter and usually helped us get him into that.
Usually it was full, with six kids, three women, two dogs and three cats...and I stood outside with the four men, checking the sky...with my portable radio. When things got bad, we'd scramble down and close up the door...luckily we never did get hit...but others nearby did...
Ironically, the best stories about disasters such as the F5 tornado that hit OKC or the Red river flood that hit Grand forks are on the Discovery channel. or NG channel..or on "storm week" on the weather channel (which we don't get here in Asia).
