What annoys me about all the fingerpointing is that the acronymn "SNAFU" was NOT invented by Bush haters, or even by FEMA, but goes back to World War II....
It is the way things work...
For example, it's nice to point fingers at the mayor and show 100 empty buses in flooded parking lots. But for him to evacuate, it would mean
1) getting drivers to drive (many have families and might not be at home...do you have their phone number, or do you have to call every school principal to go to the school office to dig up the phone numbers).
2) getting petrol for the buses. (How far can the buses go on a tank of gas? Is there enough petrol at the school bus garage? and who is going to fill the tanks? Where are THEIR phone numbers, and who has the keys to unlock the pumps to pump the petrol?)
3) organized plans for each bus for each neighborhood...most of the drivers know where they pick up kids...but if they pick up 50 school aged kids on their route, remember there are probably five people for each of these kids along the same route...who is going to say no to grandmom? Or to the thug who pulls a gun when you say he can't get on first?
4) police to back up those picking up people, and going door to door to make them come...and to leave their pets at home.
5) plans to divert empty buses...remember the Titanic? Some life boats went out nearly empty because no one was there, and many there wouldn't get on the boats...while those below were limited to only a few boats...or ignored. So buses from suburban districts would not be needed, or would be empty...while people would riot trying to get on the inner city buses..
And this is merely the mayor...
There are blogs and internet sites that discuss the problems of blocked roads, no petrol, water obstructions to boats etc...
I have expertise in local hospital emergency stuff, and even about National Guard being called up for emergencies...but not on this scale.
For National Guard, you have to phone everyone, gather them together, get the supplies, fill up the trucks etc...takes at least 24 hours to do this BEFORE you leave...
Were the Louisiana NG called up BEFORE the hurricane? That isn't Bush's job, that's the governor's job...and I have read little or nothing about the LA NG helping those displaced...don't tell me that they are doing nothing...and don't tell me "they were in Iraq" because most of them were NOT in Iraq...
OK, MSM: You want to point fingers for political purposes? Fine...but put things into context.
And try digging into small town reporters stories to get the full story of how thousands are helping...and maybe even to get a glimpse of why things didn't go perfectly...and maybe of how things, despite "snafus" actually did go RIGHT.
