But THIS LINK says they were called up in time, but evacuated and had to go back, and were essentially on the ground early...
As a former officer in the NG, I am sensitive to their coverage...for example, the small number at the superdome got little credit by hyperventillating reporters, and as my previous Katrina coverage in Sept showed, many many people helped quietly, including thousands of NG troops, including those from the Katrina link at the left...

My main criticism is not Blanco for being a wuss (although she was terrible) but that the press made things worse, and in their zeal to use a huge disaster to bash Bush, ended up ignoring the real heroes of the disaster....
