John Allen, of the (liberal) Catholic reporter does a good report on the Catholic approach to the evolution debates.
Summary: In the evolution debates, it is not science that is the problem, it's the philosophical theories being pushed as science: One: That the only way to find truth is via the scientific method, and two, that this scientific truth should applied to all areas of life:
“An evolutionary ethic that inevitably takes as its key concept the model of selectivity, that is, the struggle for survival, the victory of the fittest, successful adaptation, has little comfort to offer. Even when people try to make it more attractive in various ways, it ultimately remains a bloodthirsty ethic. … All this is of very little use for an ethic of universal peace, of practical love of one’s neighbor, and of the necessary overcoming of oneself, which is what we need.”.
