Philippine oil spill didn't have to happen

"...Pineda said Petron was getting off with a relatively lighter offense because it had simply chartered the Solar I, which sank on Aug. 11 in rough seas off Guimaras Island, spilling bunker fuel oil and polluting a 220-km coastline, fertile fishing grounds, marine reserves and tourist resorts....
During the panel inquiry, Pineda said Aguro was defiant in not admitting his responsibility for the sinking of the vessel....had the vessel been anchored with Aguro declaring a “marine protest” after seeing that the ship was in trouble, the PCG (Phil Coast Guard) would have been able to inspect the vessel to see if it was still seaworthy.

“Since there was no protest made, the PCG was not informed, so they were not able to provide assistance. The accident could have been prevented,” Pineda said.

The DoJ panel also pointed out Aguro himself had admitted that his license had expired on Jan. 31, 2002...."

Summary: They are trying to siphon off the rest of the oil. The fishing and tourist industry in the area is dead. The oil company is trying to deny any responsibility. And the insurance company will pay 6 million for the 300 million dollars of estimated damgage.
