Things girls like to do

Right.
Actually, this is still how we wash clothes here in the Philippines (of course, our wash tubs are plastic, not wood). We do have a washer and a spin "drier" (i.e. a spinner only)... we mainly use these for sheets and towels, so that our maids don't have to wash and wring them by hand before hanging them up to dry. We wash in cold water, and hang everything up to dry on the roof or in the garden. In the rainy season, we hang them up inside the garage or sometimes even in the large dining room.

In the rainy season, clothing never quite dries, so you have to iron clothing to really get them dry.

The book is one of several turn of the century books on the Univ Wisc library page concerning what used to be called Home Ec.
If you go to the main page, you can find the book includes knitting, crochet, lacemaking, needlework and embroidery instructions.
