It hasn't hit the US news, but there is a big "tainted rice" scandal in Japan...rice imported from China (and maybe VietNam) was known to be tainted with pesticide and a bad fungus. The rice was to be used for industrial purposes (e.g. to make alcohol, glue or fertilizer) but instead was sold and fed to children and old people in institutions.
One result? A ban on imports, including US wheat...
and more food inspections...there has been other problems with meat and fish and out of date items being sold...
