Mystery novelist Tony Hillerman has died...
One of the few mystery authors that I read.
When I did my first IHS stint, I worked in Gallup, and many of our patients were traditional Navajo back then. When I asked if there was a good book to introduce me to the culture, I was told: Read Hillerman.
WHat about anthropology books? I asked.
No. I was told...too many "anthropologists" spent a short time in the area, and asked personal questions...the Indians told them elaborate lies, figuring the real answer was none of their business and the lies got into a lot of books.
Hmm...sounds like pollsters...
