Although "white" Indians get lots of press speculating pre Colombian European ancestry, the real mystery of the Southern US are the Mulungeons, a dark race that goes way back but was never proven to be black, white, or Indian, or a mixture.
Recently, DNA studies are being done, finding that many indeed seem to have Spanish/African or Indian DNA, but a surprising number seem to have Sephardic Jewish blood, either via "assimilation" into Spanish families, or in one case maybe from those who once went to Scotland.
Thomas Jefferson, for example, has DNA evidence of "middle eastern" ancestry...
