Catholic trivia

There seems to be a "Bacon" meme going around the internet (see previous posts).

But now Instapundit points out there is a patron saint of Bacon...St. Anthony.

But which St. Anthony? There is a slew of them...

The most popular one in the US is St Anthony of Padua, who is invoked to find lost keys and other things.

("St Anthony come around,
something is lost and cannot be found")

But after a bit of googling, it turns out that the Anthony the patron saint of Pork is St. Athony of Egypt, the original hermit:

His relationship with pigs and patronage of swineherds is a little complicated. Skin diseases were sometimes treated with applications of pork fat, which reduced inflammation and itching. As Anthony’s intervention aided in the same conditions, he was shown in art accompanied by a pig. People who saw the art work, but did not have it explained, thought there was a direct connection between Anthony and pigs - and people who worked with swine took him as their patron.

He is also the patron of gravediggers...because he buried St. Paul the Hermit with his own hands.
