I wrote HERE about the Chinese connection with Afghanistan/central Asia, another story that few in the US media has noticed.

Trade links go back to at least the time of Rome, when the silk road took silk to Parthia (Iran) and thence to Rome...

Most of the "history" I studied in the past was political/cultural...right now, I'm reading/listening to podcasts that stress the economic ties and trade that goes back into the Neolithic period.
Fascinating...

all of this is a good argument for letting Google Books and the Pirate bay spread around free textbooks to third world countries.
