Don't mess with Santa Barbara and other things that make you go "Huh"

December 4th was the feast of Saint Barbara, the patron saint for:
US Naval Aviation Ordnancemen (AO), artillerists, anti-aircraft gunners, ammunition magazines; ammunition workers; armorers; artillery; artillerymen; bomb technicians; fortifications; and military engineers-specifically sappers and pioneers.

Why did a virginal maiden get this honor? Well, on the way back home from beheading her for being a Christian, her father was hit by lightning...so she became the saint to ask for protection against lightning strikes, and later for those involved in everything to do with explosions, from artilliary officers to miners.
