About the only thing I can find that is "controversial" about Goldfish is that they are one of the symbols of Nowruz, the Persian newyear festival...along with apples, barley sprouts, and eggs....
One lovely Iranian film, the White Balloon (1995), was about a little girl who wanted a pretty goldfish for the celbration.
