The trouble with recycling

Here in the Philippines, poor folks "recycle" trash. Our town now buries it in a landfill, but up to a few years ago, the "Smokey mountain" trash dump of Manila was notorious. It still exists, although most of the squatters now live in government housing, some still ply their trade.

Why do they do it? Because living in poverty in those picturesque villages so beloved by ecotourists is worse.

Now stories about how virtuous westerners who "recycle" their computers to poor countries are really only exposing the poor to toxic chemicals are starting to perculate out.

It's called "E waste"
