Studying ancient Egypt, one always wondered why those cities were in the south, surrounded by desert. Of course, 4000 years ago, there was a lot more rain in the Sahara, but one clue was that a nice road led to the east and the Red Sea.

Now, a NYTimes article discusses how archeologists are following the roads and discovering more ancient cities and oases.
