Factoid of the day

the retreat of the ten thousand under Xenophon is famous in history: Instead of surrendering, they kept intact and fought their way home.

Fewer know the story of the Czech legion, soldiers who refused to fight for Austria, deserted, and fought with the Russians in World war I; when the Bolsheviks took over, however, they fought with the White Army, and finding themselves in the middle of Russia, essentially hijacked the Transiberian railroad to go east...took over Vladivostok and with some Japanese help managed to get on ships and get home, becoming founders of Czechoslovakia.

podcast HERE.

it argues that the presence of the Czech legion was the excuse used to kill the Tsar and their family, out of fear they would be rescued.

photos here.

and then there is the legend of the Tsar's gold... the Czech legion supposedly took some of it with them and gave the rest back...Did the rest end up in Japan or is it in Lake Baikal?
