As a human being, Bin Laden may have deserved compassion and even forgiveness, the Dalai Lama said in answer to a question about the assassination of the Al Qaeda leader. But, he said, "Forgiveness doesn't mean forget what happened. … If something is serious and it is necessary to take counter-measures, you have to take counter-measures."
this is in contrast to a lot of Catholic bishops who seem to have more sympathy for the one who does evil than than happiness justice has been done. Don't dare be happy that a person who killed your friends and threatens you with death is now met his maker.
“In front of the death of man, a Christian never rejoices but rather reflects on the grave responsibility of each one in front of God and men, and hopes and commits himself so that every moment not be an occasion for hatred to grow but for peace.”
Translation: You crass folks over there are happy but I am not like you. I forgive, I talk with gravity about forgiveness.
“'Although [his death] is a [form] of violence and no act of violence can be justified... it's a big deal to curb violence,' Caloocan Bishop Deogracias IƱiguez said in a phone interview with reporters on Monday.
Translation: You should have sung kumbaya and asked him to please give up peacefully, not try to capture him with guns. But I guess it was necessary.
”
“Killing someone should never be a cause for celebration or joy,” says Rick Halperin, past chairman of the board of directors of Amnesty International USA. “We as a nation are repulsed when we see Muslims dancing over the death of Americans. Why would we think our reaction would not be seen as disgusting behavior to them?
uh, maybe because they were rejoicing that ordinary folks who did no harm to anyone were killed in cold blood, and we are rejoicing that a murderous killer is no longer able to kill ordinary folk in cold blood?
that sympathy for the devil is part of the reason that so many despise "religious leaders". Believe me, a lot of Africans are angry that they Vatican greeted Mr. Mugabe to attend the recent beatification. Yeah, maybe they couldn't stop him from coming, but they could have sat him behind a pillar or ignored he was there.
Similarly, too many bishops thought that pedophiles in the US should be forgiven "seven times seven times" when most of the parents of the boys involved would have preferred the guy to be strung up Texas style.
and, of course, if the Catholic bishops here started denouncing all those pious politicians who killed their rivals, took bribes and kickbacks and stole elections, there would probably be no one left to donate lavishly for the church fiestas etc.
don't mind me. I'm in my Christopher Hitchens phase of calling out religious fools.
I'll say a rosary tonite to make up for my anger.
