Factoid of the day take two

There's no cure for Dengue, which is endemic here in SEAsia, but now reports say the Tawatawa plant could help prevent the dehydration complication of that disease.

foodrecapnet has more. and more from Internet Philippines (where I got the photo)

I know the plant: it's a weed that we remove from our garden all the time.

another possible cure: Camote tops. This is the top leaves of the sweet potato plant that is used here as a "green" vegetable.

another way to prevent control the mosquitoes that spread Dengue and Malaria: Guppies.

They can eat the "wrigglers" (larvae)of the mosquito in water and are used in many countries for fresh water mosquito control.

photo is that of a plain female guppie.

Not to be mixed up with the Pregnant Guppie.

Koi do this also: we use koi in our fountain to control the mosquitoes.

and your vocabulary lesson of the day:

Whales have calves,
Cats have kittens,
Bears have cubs,
Bats have bittens,
Swans have cygnets,
Seals have puppies,
But guppies just have little guppies.
