The "let's not be judgemental" article in the news today:
"Suicide bombers in Iraq use suicide bombs strategically as cost-effective, precise, highly destructive weapons," said the study...
No, not Freakonomics, but Lancet...they also found their earlier claim to huge numbers of casualties (released in a rush to influence Bush's reelection) was off by a half million deaths...

40 years ago in medical school we knew that a strict diet would reverse heart disease (indeed, the heart attack rate went way down in Europe during the starvation years of World War II). The problem is that such a diet is almost impossible to stay on, unless one is a food freak.
What goes around comes around. Again from CNN:
For more than 20 years, the Cleveland Clinic doctor has tried to get Americans to eat like the Papua New Guinea highlanders, rural Chinese, central Africans and the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico.
yeah. Rural Chinese, like Pinoys, die of high blood pressure, Central Africans are malnourhisned and vitamin deficient from eating too much maize (lacking B vitamins) or too much low nutrition sweet potatoes and get cyanide poisoning from taro, and the Tarahumara Indians eat lost of maize and have a high rate of tuberculosis. The dirty little secret is that these low protein diets means lower resistance to simple infections.
from the Seattle Times:
About 20 miles away in Creel, the Jesuit-run clinic is filled with Tarahumarans - adults and children - too ill to walk, much less to run. A staggering 90 percent of Tarahumara children suffer from malnutrition, officials say. About 60 percent of Chihuahua's adult Indians have tuberculosis, said Villafuerte, the pediatrician.
So you won't die of high cholesterol, just pellegra, strokes from hypertension and of course any minor infection that comes your way.
