Factoid of the day

No, nuking a volcano probably wouldn't help stop the eruption, but this is interesting:

Conventional bombs have been used to divert lava flow, as the US Air Force did with flows emanating from the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii, sufficiently diverting the lava flow away from the city of Hilo. The results were published as Diversion of lava flows by aerial bombing - lessons from Mauna Loa volcano, Hawaii in 1980.

Diverting lava flows was done in Iceland in 1973, by spraying water and cooling the slow flows Story here.

It's not just the oozing lava that destroys, but the Lahar/volcanic dust, that turns to mud with heavy rain.

After Pinatubo, we lost one city to the Lahar, and built dikes to protect Pampanga. official report here.

it was a limited success, but thanks to our lovely ex president Gloria, the abandoned Clark AFB is now a business/tourist center and Mt Pinatubo is an eco tourist area.
