Simbang Gabi

Simbang Gabi is the early morning mass ("misa de gallo") before the cock crows for 9 days before Christmas. Mass was held early so the farmers could attend before going to work in the fields.



usually it is full of people of all ages, and after mass, the young folks go to the square to socialize with each other.

Lolo usually attends the mass, but this year probably not, even though they have a late afternoon mass for folks who can't attend in the morning.

There was a big kerfuffle in NYCity about the custom, where the Cardinal said no masses outside of church and tried to shut down the celebration at the embassy/consulate there. But they settled the problem in the latest report.
