Factoid of the day

at least 23 American POW's were killed by the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, and several Dutch POW's in Nagasaki, but here is one interesting fact:

Joe Kieyoomia was one of the New Mexico National Guard who were sent to defend Manila in late 1941.

No, he was not a "Codetalker", but he was tortured by the Japanese when they found he was a Navajo, to try to break the Navajo based code of the codetalkers, but the "double code" meant he couldn't understand it.

and then he was sent to Japan:

After surviving the prison camps, the "hell ships" and the torture, Kieyoomia was a prisoner in Nagasaki when that city was the target of the second atomic bomb dropped by US forces. Kieyoomia survived the attack saying he was protected by the concrete walls of his cell. After 3½ years as a prisoner of war, he was abandoned for three days after the bombing, but says a Japanese officer finally freed him. He returned to the United States.

an interview with Mr. Kieyoomia HERE.
he died in 1997.
