A bit of googling revealed this book Medieval Intrigue which goes into detail on who helped the king escape, and who hid him. It names names and gives links on who was related to whom, and various reasons why the son Edward III was aware of this but didn't spill the beans (if he did, he might have to let his father take over England again). The main "document" supporting the theory was called the Fieschi letter.
So what was the truth? Could DNA testing figure out who was buried in Edward II's grave? Do the secret Vatican archives reveal the real story?
so anyway it is possible that the king wasn't killed, (and some historians suggest the ghastly manner of his death described in most biographies seems to have been made up 30 years later by someone who loathed the queen).
Check out EdwardII blog for all the information your little heart could desire about this famous (or infamous) man.
