Homesteading

The book "Five Acres and Independence" is available at Hathi trust, but only for reading on line unless you have a sign-in partner.

However, project Gutenburg has a similar book Three Acres and Freedom on line HERE.

these tend to be "outdated" but they are interesting.
(we sell organic rice and have loads of books like this). another good book is the "Square foot garden" and the magazine "organic gardening". The problem is that most of these don't help us in the tropics, where our problems are a bit different.

here is a link about what we actually grow...yup...we have mangos, papaya and bananas in our garden, and on and off we grow tomatoes, small eggplant, and hot peppers (which we use the leaves for our soups). We can grow lettuce under a mesh in the cooler season, but it tends to go to seed, so we rarely eat salads (it does grow up in Baguio so we can buy it "locally".) I had a basil plant, but we didn't use it so I didn't replant. Ditto for cilantro.

What I'm really looking for is a stevia plant: I brought seeds with me, but alas they don't grow true, (one out of a hundred plants are sweet enough to use as sugar substitute...so usually you have to plant a stem, not a seed). One of these days we'll have to check in Manila...Luckily, there is also a local company selling this now.
