Strategypage on Afghanistan: violence, drugs, and some people starting to change...

and will the US trend to ship via the northern route result in Afghanistan rejoining the "silk road" nations of Central Asia rather than their traditional ties with Iran and Pakistan?

Armchair General links to three articles on wargaming an Israeli attack on Iran...

I'm too busy to read them, so bookmarking for a later read.

The next time you read stories of those romantic indigenous villagers living in paradise, remember this little problem overlooked by the green romantic view: Maternal mortality.
From Fides:In the years between 1990 and 2008, around the world, the rate of maternal mortality in childbirth has decreased by 34%. One cannot say the same unfortunately for Papua New Guinea, where it has doubled. Approximately 99% of pregnant women who died, lived in developing countries, and the risk continues to increase in rural areas. In Papua New Guinea, predominantly a rural area, gender disparities and poor health conditions of services have contributed to the worsening of this phenomenon
One big problem: no roads to get to the clinics (remember this next time you read how "indigneous" leaders insist they don't want roads built or contacts with the modern world...do they really want to be isolated, are they being bribed to join these marches, or are they afraid that if their wives see life in the modern world is safer and easier, they might decide to find a nice (rich) outsider for a husband?

Why "bioengineered bird flu" is still controversial.
