Good News of the day

oBoston.com has a photo of Bush helping to renovate a cancer clinic in Zambia.

In a photo provided by the George W. Bush Presidential Center, former U.S. President George W. Bush uses a roller to the paint the highest parts of the walls of the Ngungu Health Center on Sunday, July 1, 2012, in Kabwe, Zambia, Africa. The former president and his wife, Laura, are in Africa to promote a partnership between the George W. Bush Institute, the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, UNAIDS and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, that aims to fight cervical and breast cancer in sub-Saharan Africa. (AP Photo/George W. Bush Presidential Center, Shealah Craighead)

a nasty cancer of young women that usually is only diagnosed when it is too late to cure.

Inserting a single gene into an egg doesn't mean that the baby  has three parents, but is unethical (because it is an "experiment" on the child).

It does mean that people who carry a "bad gene" (e.g. hemophilia) might be able to have their own genetic child in the future.

"Oh Brave New World that has such people in it"

The Rotavirus vaccine had some problems a few years ago when they released it, but they have fixed it an the Philippine government is planning to vaccinate 700 thousand children with the vaccine.
3000 kids here die each year from the disease.

People in the USA and Europe don't appreciate how children can quickly die of vomiting/diarrhea from this nasty virus, one of the more severe causes of gastroenteritis.

Instapundit has links to an article on using graphene to desalinize water.

Wired suggests the Higgs-Boson particle might turn out to be an uninteresting dull particle and that would mess up a lot of different theories on the universe.
On the other hand, this article suggest they still haven't found it.

 Daydreaming is good for you.
While moments for reflection may be hard to come by, a new article suggests that the long-lost art of introspection -- even daydreaming -- may be an increasingly valuable part of life.

but they have a photo of a yoga meditator to illustrate the article: actually, that is exactly the opposite of daydreaming: in yoga/self hypnosis, you clear the mind of all thoughts, including logical analysis of a problem, whereas in daydreaming you sort of let your thoughts run wild in front of you while you distance yourself from them while the deep mind is thinking of the problem. It sort of lets your hyperactive thoughts play so you can think logically about a problem.

Since meditation/"mindfulness" is so close to self hypnosis, and since 5 to 10 percent of people are very vulnerable to suggestion with hypnosis, this suggestion makes me shudder:
She and her colleagues argue that mindful introspection can become an effective part of the classroom curriculum, providing students with the skills they need to engage in constructive internal processing and productive reflection.

In contrast, with introspection, you aren't doing yoga or daydreaming at all: you clear your mind of everything but that problem and think about it using the logical circuits of the brain, often drawing or using a computer to logically clarify the points of the problem.

so the article is interesting but seems to be a bit confused on what they are talking about.

Lolang is officially the biggest crocodile in the world.
It was named after a government environmental officer who died from a heart attack after traveling to Bunawan to help capture the beast, Elorde said.
