rant removed.
and yes, I am grateful to LBJ and his "great society" program which funded much of my medical school tuition, and as a result was able to spend my career serving the poor instead of working for a higher salary at an HMO to repay huge student loans.
But the medical school was founded and built with private money, my teachers were often donating time for mentoring, and the idea that the government is gracious enough to do nice things for you sounds more like "noblesse oblige" than the communitarian idea, where people get together and devise how to do something localy, often by local or state governments if it can't be done by a non government way (churches or local groups), and only use the federral government for large things like defense and guarding the borders.
The government isn't some noble organization that bows to care for us: it's of the people, by the people, and for the people, and that's why a lot of people got mad at his snide remarks.
