David Warren has a thoughtful essay on the idea of progress:
For everything that goes around, comes around again. Human capacities have not changed over the short period of historical time, and human sinfulness cannot be expunged by historical processes. Nor can Grace. The worst things that have ever happened can hap-pen again, and the best things, ditto. The fact that they have happened is the proof that they can happen.

In case you didn't know: Cats rule.
The Internet Cat Video Film Festival will make its debut Aug. 30 in Minneapolis, Minn., allowing fans to collectively watch cats play the piano, jump off couches, and be general jerks to other animals.---------------------------------------
First Things is under internet attack: this is the second time in two weeks.
They tend to write highly nuanced articles about religion in public life, so I suspect they are being targeted for their views.
Well, it could be worse: They could be SWATTED...

Obama has no intention of changing the HHS mandate against the Catholic institutions
Uh, when you are paid for work done, you are not "taking government money" you are being paid for work done, but never mind. And the institution IS paying for it. TANSTAASFL...
“But we did say that big Catholic hospitals or universities who employ a lot of non-Catholics and who receive a lot of federal money, that for them to be in a position to say to a woman who works there you can’t get that from your insurance company even though the institution isn’t paying for it, that that crosses the line where that woman, she suddenly is gonna have to bear the burden and the cost of that. And that’s not fair,” Obama stated
But no one seems to wonder who will pay for work done by doctors who see the elderly:
From AMAWire:----------------------------------------------------------
Just six months before Medicare physician payments are scheduled to be cut 27 percent, the AMA's president-elect testifiedWednesday before the U.S. Senate Finance Committee about the need to stabilize Medicare for physicians and patients....
Every time someone says that ASEAN should settle the West Philippine sea controversy "peacefully" means that we should obey China, who is refusing to give up their claims.
StrategyPage report here.
The Philippines is trying to enlist ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) or American help in confronting China over Scarborough Shoal. But so far neither the United States nor ASEAN is willing to get involved in a direct confrontation with China over the matter. The Philippines cannot stand up to China by itself but does not want to surrender its coastal waters to Chinese claims.China knows that Obama wouldn't risk hurting their feelings, so essentially they will keep pushing, and not just against us.
and it's not just us (although we are the "weakest link")...it is also Japan, India,South Korea, etc.

Cellphones! now even the sheep have them:
CAPE TOWN—A South African farmer is fielding phone calls from his sheep, after equipping them with cell phones to keep tabs on the flock amid recent livestock thefts, according to local press Wednesday.
When the sheep call, it is always bad news for farmer Erard Louw of the Cape Town suburbs, as the phones around their necks are only set to switch on when the sheeps start running, a sign thieves have cut through the fences.
