Another of her compositions was Aloha Oe, a song she had written previously and transcribed during her confinement. In her writings, she says "At first I had no instrument, and had to transcribe the notes by voice alone; but I found, notwithstanding disadvantages, great consolation in composing, and transcribed a number of songs. Three found their way from my prison to the city of Chicago, where they were printed, among them the "Aloha Oe" or "Farewell to Thee," which became a very popular song".[26] Originally written as a lovers' good-bye, the song came to be regarded as a symbol of, and lament for, the loss of her country.her story is found at a PBS film HERE

New York based novelist writes about evil Americans who prefer to commute in cars than in public transportation, and points out to the wonderful transportation systems in Europe and hanging to a strap in public tranportation.
Sharing public transport acknowledges what Barack Obama insisted on in his convention speech and Mitt Romney wants us to ignore: We share not just space but infrastructure, not just location but a society. The small niceties — offering one’s seat to someone older or less fit, answering a visitor’s questions about where to eat — connect inevitably to larger issues of civility and decency, like whether Rosa Parks should have to sit in the back of the bus, or whether we should all get healthcare and education.Wonder if this guy ever commuted.
He ignores that after walking from work to the crowded subway station and crowded subway car, we have to line up outside for a crowded bus and the walk a couple blocks home in the sun, rain, or snow...
As for that "strap hanging": it is not glorious, but requires one to try not to fall over while being jerked at every stop...keeping our balance while carrying a heavy purse/package/briefcase, while making sure no one steals it or that we aren't subjected to being "felt up" by the local perverts...
which is probably why there is no place to leave comments on the essay...
