memoirs of a geisha, written by an American man and made into a film by Hollywood, starring a Chinese actress.
In parts, alas, and I haven't checked out if it's completely available.
But heck, the girls here liked the story, and I bought the DVD for them.

the classic study is Ruth Benedict's book the Chrysanthemum and the sword, but it is about pre WWII Japan. I used to have the book, but didn't bring it with me, although I have her other book, patterns of culture, around here somewhere.
