Snowflakes: how times change.

Snowflakes meant something different in 1944...

My late uncle was in the Battle of the Bulge and the only time he talked about it he related that they put newspapers into their coats and shoes because it was so cold....

hmm... apparently General McAuliffe was a gentleman who didn't use bad language and actually said (and wrote) "nuts" not something R rated. However, when the Germans didn't understand, the officer carrying the written reply did use R rated language so they understood what it meant.
