The German skincare maker’s ad for a deodorant included a picture of a woman and the slogan “white is purity.”
It was posted on Nivea’s Middle East Facebook page with the caption: “Keep it clean, keep it bright. Don’t let anything ruin it.”
the problem? This is not about race, but about a problem that many non white people have: Darkening of the skin of the axilla.
deodorants with whiteners are common here in the Philippines:the darkening of the skin in their armpits (also the back of the neck or other skin fold areas) is often due to acanthosis nigricans.
This is found in Asians, AmerIndians and many Hispanics, and can be a marker for pre diabetes. Indeed, when I spotted the darkening of the skin of the axilla or the back of the neck during a routine visit (e.g. for a cold), I often would do a blood sugar, and indeed did pick up a few cases of diabetes that way.
of course, whitener is also common in skin creams too. All the local Filipino girls want to have pale skin like the women in the popular Korean soap operas. here is a LOL commercial about the trend
