The Trustee from the Toolroom

This classic Nevil Shute novel is available for free at Project Gutenberg Canada.

A skilled tool worker who writes about making miniature machines is entrusted with his niece until her more affluent parents can sail on their yacht to Vancouver and find a new home. This is in the days after World War II... when taking money out of the country was limited by English law.

But when their sailboat disappears on a deserted shoal, and their savings also cannot be found, he faces a dilemma: Where did they hide the money, and how can he get it back?

I always thought it would make a great movie, but as far as I know, no one has done it yet.

a lot of Nevil Shute's novels have been made into film: The classic one is a Town Like Alice, was made into both an old film and a lovely miniseries on BBC/PBS, or the older one Highway in the Sky, about a nerdish professor who predicts a plane will crash from metal fatigue.

but he is best known for his anti war film On The Beach....
