I ran across another interview with Joe Kenda:
my background is not "elite" so I actually know cops and firemen and busdrivers in my family.
In the interview they get his wife to talk, and she explains she was a nurse because her mom told her that if she had an education she would always have freedom to leave a bad marriage, or to support our family if the husband died.
so why did she become a nurse? like a lot of us she read "Cherry Ames" books.

unrelated item: While visiting my son, we watched the new Alice in Wonderland movie with Johnny Depp. I hadn't seen it before, and personally I hated the book and the Disney cartoon as a kid, but the new movie was better than I thought it would be.
