Unexpected Heroes

Last Sunday was Holocaust Remembrance day.

here are a few stories that might not have gotten a lot of publicity.

via TeaAtTrianon: links to an article in Rome Reports that discussing a Polish family (mother, father and 6 children) killed in 1944 after soldiers found they were hiding Jews in their home.

includes this factoid:

The Germans created a law in Poland that for any type of help, even a piece of bread given to a Jew, the person would be killed.” More than 190,000 Polish people were killed as a result of this law, including the Ulma family.

Poland gets a bad press for it's anti Semitism, but the picture shows that was not the whole story. And if 190 thousand were killed for hiding Jews, then what about those who were not discovered and killed? more here.

one of my friends and her sister survived hidden in a Catholic orphanage in France (while their parents were housed elsewhere by families... hiding children was especially risky if they couldn't pass for locals, since often they would stray or talk to the wrong person). When the soldiers inspected the orphanage, the nuns hid them in the laundry room where the bedwetter's mattresses were being aired out (i.e. very smelly so the soldiers didn't want to check out the room).

her husband and his family survived thanks to being in a refugee camp in Turkey.

Laszlo Montgomery's Chinese history podcast has a series on Jews and Jewish Refugees from various pogroms who fled to China.

and here is another trivial fact: Prince Philip of England's mother also risked her life hiding a family in her Athens apartment during WWII.

Her deafness was partial, not complete, and she suffered a nervous breakdown in her 40's and was hospitalized. But one wonders if this was not just from the deportation of the family from Greece and near execution of her husband in the early 1920's and the loss of her Russian cousins, but also in her biography it notes that she set up and ran hospitals for the wounded during World War I, suggesting a PTSS component behind her psychotic break.
