He is best known for his editing of his father's works (Some were released as stand alone books, but the History of Middle Earth series has a lot of his commentary about his father's writings).
If you read the book "Letters of JRR Tolkien", you know that his father sent copies of the on going writing to him when he was in South Africa learning to fly a plan for the Royal Air Force during WWII...
what you many not know is that he was also an "Inkling".
He was perhaps the closest to his father: because his father was married, he often did his tutor sessions at home. As a boy, Christopher had rheumatic fever and was placed on bedrest at home for months, and became close to his father during that time.
