Remembering Gettysburg

the Battle of Gettysburg was on July 1 to 3, 1863

And don't forget the Civil War nurses: many were local women who nursed the wounded until the professionals arrived.

The film mentions the little known story of the Catholic sisters who nursed during the Civil war. It is one of the back stories on how Catholics began to be accepted in the USA. 

Many years ago I remember my uncle showing me a mansion that had served as a hospital in Georgia, and in the garden was a statue of the Virgin Mary, even though the deep south was very anti Catholic at the time.

 He asked the caretakers about this, and was told that the Catholic sisters had nursed many soldiers and on their breaks would come out to pray in the garden where they had erected the statue. After the war, the sisters left, and the locals left the statue there in memory of their work.
