family news

we had a big party last night, celebrating the birthday of myself and my granddaughter. No our birthdays are not now, but she has a week off of teaching in Thailand and so we decided to celebrate it early since she won't be here for her actual birthday.

The problem? Some of those invited couldn't come due to sickness. There is an influenza epidemic here in town, and also gastroenteritis, which is common in the hot season, either viral or from food not stored safely, so they are either sick or caring for their sick loved ones. Some came for the meal, but couldn't stay for the music etc and others didn't come but we will send them food.

They bought me my favorite: Roast beef (the beef here is not very good, and indeed, until an epidemic in pigs made pork expensive we never ate beef at all. But now they do sell beef which our cook stews for us. Decent steak or roasted beef means buying expensive imported beef because the local beef is tough and we always buy locally). Kuya also made a small dish of mashed potatoes for me. Yes we have potatoes but usually in stews, not mashed.

We also had lots of pancit, BBQ, fried rice, lechon pork, two cakes (Ruby cooked a carrot cake. Yum). etc.
