there have been lots of "ain't it awful" stuff on CNNI (I haven't watched in 24 hours, partly due to brownouts here...FYI I'm blogging from my laptop on battery right now).
But although the headlines are "thousands dead"...and the 96,000 plus outside of NO in shelters, I can't find much about the total number of displaced...
So I'm going to search local papers for this information.

Texas is absorbing a quarter of a million refugees.
State officials estimated Saturday that 100,000 Louisianans were in Texas hotels and motels, 123,000 in 97 shelters around the state and another 16,000 scheduled to arrive by bus or airplane by day’s end. The Astrodome is now home to about 15,000 people, rather than the 23,000 originally envisioned. Another 11,000 are being housed in ancillary buildings. Another 8,000 are in the city’s convention center. But even as the influx continues, officials are beginning to move people to more permanent housing, a few hundred at a time… . Many officials say they are working under the assumption that many of the new arrivals may stay in Texas for a year.That's Texas estimates: 157,000 people being housed in Texas...
